From shattering decades-old yardage records to chasing Michael Irvin’s touchdown mark, Malachi Toney is systematically rewriting the Miami Hurricanes record books to cement an everlasting legacy at Coral Gables.
MIAMI, Fla. – While the Miami Hurricanes remain undefeated through seven games, star wide receiver Malachi Toney has been on a record-breaking tour.
Last season, the former 17-year-old reclassified freshman led the Football Bowl Subdivision in all of the following categories:
- Catches: 109 (New program single-season record)
- Receiving yards: 1,211 (New program single-season record)
- Receiving touchdowns: 10
It was only the start of Toney’s emergence as a superstar in college football. In the Hurricanes’ season opener against Stanford, he led with 234 receiving yards on 12 catches and scored three touchdowns. Toney was posing as the Heisman Trophy when finding the end zone. He surpassed Eddie Brown’s 42-year-old record for the most receiving yards in a single game in program history, 220 against Boston College in 1984.
Seven weeks later, Toney had another remarkable performance that will last a lifetime. In the Hurricanes’ 52-23 win over Pitt on Saturday, he had 16 catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns. It’s a new program record for the most receptions in a single game. Last season, against the Panthers, Toney matched former Hurricanes wide receiver Mike Harley’s 13-catch performance against Duke in the 2021 college football season.
The former three-star recruit is on pace to be regarded as one of the greats in “The U’s” history, which features Hall of Famers such as Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, among several others.
However, there are still other records Toney could break either this season or the next, as a junior and first-time eligible for the 2028 NFL Draft.
Former Hurricanes All-American wide receiver Xavier Restrepo holds the program record for all-time receptions with 200. Toney is currently at 175, seven behind Harley for No. 2 with 182, whom the Liberty City (Fla.) native could surpass this upcoming Saturday against UNC at Chapel Hill (NC).
Also, Restrepo holds the record with 2,844 all-time receiving yards. Toney’s performance against Pitt elevated him to seventh on the list with 2,163, surpassing Leonard Hankerson. He could reach as high as fifth this season, which is currently Lamar Thomas at 2,271.
A record Toney is very likely to surpass in the upcoming weeks is the all-time receiving touchdowns list. He’s currently at 21 and Irvin leads with 26. The former Hurricanes superstar will likely be on the sidelines to witness history.
Several football legends have passed through the Coral Gables campus and Toney is looking to be the next one.
