Inheriting a historic legacy, the Duke transfer faces immense expectations to snap a two-decade championship drought and lead the Miami Hurricanes back to the pinnacle of college football.
MIAMI, Fla. – Transferring from Duke and winning an ACC Championship, Darian Mensah embraced a bigger challenge by joining the Miami Hurricanes, drawing attention along the way.
Although the 21-year-old has experience with the portal, the pressure is unlike any other. The Hurricanes are coming off a historic 13-3 season, including a trip to the National Championship game. Despite falling short by one drive to Indiana, it established a new standard within the Coral Gables program.
Mensah follows the path of Cam Ward and Carson Beck. According to On3, he’s the third-highest quarterback to monitor ahead of the upcoming regular season.

Mensah finished last season with more passing yards (3,973) and touchdowns (34) than both quarterbacks. Although Indiana is the reigning champion, Hoover isn’t facing as much pressure as Mensah does, with the second week of fall camp underway. The Hoosiers don’t have nearly as rich a college football history as “The U.”
The Hurricanes won five National Championships, including an undefeated (12-0) team in 2001.
However, it’s been 22 years and counting since the last trophy was brought back to the Coral Gables campus. Several experts and fans have asked, “When will ‘The U’ be back?” Although Mario Cristobal isn’t fond of the question, he has brought the program close to its former glory.
Mensah wasn’t a part of the previous team, but faces greater expectations. Winning a conference title with the Blue Devils is considered shocking to most. However, he won’t be able to sneak up against other National Championship contenders.
The Hurricanes are expected to win the ACC, which would be a first. Mensah’s experience should help accomplish that, providing an automatic bid to the College Football Playoffs, potentially a first-round bye. Despite being inexperienced, he has the intangibles to compete against the nation’s best.
Mensah has the supporting cast to end a two-decade-plus championship drought, which only increases the pressure. He’s expected to surpass the production and results of Ward and Beck, which means delivering a title.
The Hurricanes open the second week of fall camp and pads will be worn. Mensah continues to get acclimated in offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson’s system, along with the new wide receiver core and established running back supporting cast. He is surrounded by promising offensive talent, looking to translate to results on the field this upcoming season.
