After a redshirt season, five-star prospect Hayden Lowe joins a loaded defensive front, aiming to translate high school explosiveness into the Miami Hurricanes' next elite pass-rushing threat.
MIAMI, Fla. – Unlike the offensive line, the Miami Hurricanes’ defensive line doesn’t appear to be missing any steps. Despite losing star edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. to the 2026 NFL Draft – both first-round selections – there is plenty of talent ready to step up.
Armondo Blount and Marquise Lightfoot proved to be impactful in limited roles last season as sophomores. They combined for 42 total tackles, 23 solos and 19 assists, eight tackles for loss, and five sacks – both appearing in 15 games. Blount and Lightfoot are expected to take on expanded roles, including more time on the field.
Alongside them is Missouri transfer and All-SEC honoree Damon Wilson II. He’s coming off a career season: 23 total tackles, nine solos and 14 assists, 9.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and a three-yard interception against Vanderbilt. The local Venice native returned to the Sunshine State to walk the same path as Mesidor and Bain Jr. to great success – led by defensive line coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor.
However, the Hurricanes have a young talent looking to blossom: Hayden Lowe. He didn’t appear in any games last season due to undergoing offseason surgery and redshirted to preserve NCAA eligibility. Lowe was a five-star top-100 prospect coming from Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, California.
After four seasons, he stacked 159 total tackles, 88 solos and 71 assists, 42 tackles for loss, 24.5 sacks, four passes defended, and two interceptions in 37 total games, according to MaxPreps. Lowe had scholarship offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, and Ohio State Buckeyes, among others, before committing to the Coral Gables program. He showed explosiveness and quickness, which allowed him to cause havoc.
Despite missing an inaugural collegiate season, Lowe had the opportunity to watch closely how Mesidor and Bain Jr. dominated at the line of scrimmage. Both stars were among college football’s most prolific defenders and pass rushers.
Although Lowe didn’t participate in spring practices or the exhibition game held at Cobb Stadium in front of local fans – personal reasons – the 19-year-old is expected to return to the Coral Gables campus for fall camp. He will very likely get opportunities to attack opposing quarterbacks throughout the upcoming season, but there’s a long journey ahead before a starting job becomes a conversation.
The redshirt freshman is listed at 6-5, 255 pounds. Lowe has the talent to be a significant factor for the Hurricanes’ defense, but he will need to show it consistently on the field.
