The Miami Hurricanes are officially set to face the Indiana Hoosiers for the National Championship after defeating the Oregon Ducks in the Peach Bowl semifinals, with a final score of 56-22. It wasn't an easy path to get to this point for the team, but especially for quarterback Carson Beck.
It's been over a year since the redshirt senior underwent UCL surgery after sustaining the injury on Dec. 7th, 2024, in the SEC championship game. He was a member of the Georgia Bulldogs facing the Texas Longhorns. As halftime was approaching, Beck attempted to throw a final pass, but was met by linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., who hit him on the elbow and knocked the football out. The star quarterback was in clear pain and didn't return for the rest of the game.
After undergoing an MRI, it was clear that Beck needed surgery, which was a difficult situation as he declared for the NFL draft. In a recent interview, the redshirt senior revealed that he was unable to grip a football after the initial injury.
"There's a part of me that knew something wasn't right," Beck said. "The next day I went in, I could just tell it was not going to be okay."
As the rehab journey started, his future at the next stage of football was in doubt, which resulted in him withdrawing and entering the transfer portal. Afterwards, on Jan. 10th, 2025, Beck decided to join the Hurricanes, now proving to be the greatest choice made.
In his first and only season with the powerhouse program, he appeared in all 12 regular season games, completed 263 of 352 passes, 74.7 percent, for 3,072 yards, recording 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Despite the great production, the road to recovery was "painful."
"There were mornings that I didn't want to come to the facility and do rehab," Beck added. "It was awful. My elbow's getting cranked on."
Beck isn't the flashiest quarterback in the nation, but his winning impact is undeniable. In the Hurricanes' victory over the Ole Miss Rebels in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl Semifinals, he completed 23 of 37 passes, 62.2 percent, for 268 yards, recording one interception, but three total touchdowns, including a drive of his own for the game-winner. The final score was 31-27. As the team has an opportunity to win a National Championship in their home stadium, despite being the road team, Beck has helped transform the program back to its elite status.
It's a marvelous comeback story: from devastating injury to return to stardom.
The National Championship game is set for Monday night, Jan. 19th, in Miami, Florida, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN.
