The Miami Hurricanes will have the opportunity to heal up and review extra film as they enter their bye week. The team is coming off a griddy victory over the Florida Gators, with a final score of 26-7. They proved that even with a sloppy offensive performance by quarterback Carson Beck, the defense can carry and pull through.
Running backs CharMar Brown and Mark Fletcher Jr. also played significant roles in putting points on the scoreboard. They combined for 249 yards and reached the end zone for all three Hurricanes' touchdowns. Despite the gloomy weather, the team did not back down from the challenge and emerged victorious.
However, this matchup shifted the Heisman Trophy race.
Beck didn't have a strong performance that we are accustomed to seeing so far this season. He finished completing 17 of 30 passes for 160 yards. It's the first game that the redshirt senior had less than 200 passing yards.
Beck had many throws that were either way over his target or too low. The plays were good, but came out inaccurate. The Gators' defensive line was the only bright spot for Florida in the game, causing havoc for Beck in the pocket. He was also sacked once by Jayden Woods and threw an interception.
In the latest Heisman rankings by On3, Beck fell from third to fifth.
"It was the worst outing for the season for Beck," they wrote. "He failed to find the end zone and was picked off once, at a crucial juncture of the game."
However, the voters of this poll couldn't deny Beck's impact.
"He's a big reason the team is sitting 4-0 and ranked in the top 10 nationally," they added. "That's enough to have him way up in the Heisman Trophy poll standings."
Beck will have a chance to redeem himself and rebuild his stocks on Oct 4th, against the Florida State Seminoles.
However, in the same rankings, defensive lineman Rueben Bain Jr. cracked the list at six. He finishes right behind Beck. The junior was the only defender listed.
Bain Jr. is on pace to have a career season. He currently sits with 11 solo and assist tackles, along with an interception. That came from the Hurricanes' week one matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, when cornerback Keionte Scott kicked the ball into the air for Bane Jr. to catch.
"Bain continues to be at his best in the big games," On3 wrote. "The talented defensive lineman turned in a season-high seven tackles against Florida, while bringing up his sack tally on the season up to two."
Bain is among the best defensive players in the nation. If he manages to put together a couple of monster performances, there is no denying his case.
