Star running back Mark Fletcher Jr. was originally planning to be an Ohio State Buckeye, then pivoted towards the Miami Hurricanes. Now, they'll face each other in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinals.

The Miami Hurricanes have an opportunity to rule the college football world once again, after defeating the Texas A&M Aggies in the first round of the College Football Playoffs, with a final score of 10-3. It was a game decided by defense, until wide receiver Malachi Toney had a clear path towards the endzone in the fourth quarter and on the final drive.

However, the 18-year-old wouldn't have gotten that route without star running back Mark Fletcher Jr. The junior found a clear gap at the line of scrimmage to rush for 56 yards, which was the perfect setup for the Hurricanes to win the game, after an outstanding interception by safety Bryce Fitzgerald. They are set to face the reigning champion Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl Quarterfinals, in Arlington, Texas, on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31st, 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

It's going to be an exciting matchup, but also a tad bit personal for Fletcher Jr.

Before the Miami native decided to stay home, he first committed to the Buckeyes program on April 12, 2022. However, an opportunity to play in front of family played a huge factor in his decision to decommit a few months later.

Fletcher Jr. committed to the Hurricanes on December 18th, 2022, which has grown to be an amazing decision, especially for the program. He was a crucial piece to the rebuild and the team's success throughout this regular season.

"I'm from this area," the 21-year-old said. "I just felt that I would be [more] successful if I just stayed home."

In 10 games this year, Fletcher Jr. rushed 141 times for 685 yards, recording 10 touchdowns. He also confirmed his decision to return to the Hurricanes next season for what will be his senior year.

The former four-star recruit has an opportunity cement himself as one of the greats in the program. He's currently 13th on the all-time Hurricanes rushing list with 1,978 career yards. There's a tremendous chance for him to climb, especially after deciding to return for another year.

If the Buckeyes matchup looks anything similar to the Aggies game, then Fletcher Jr. is going to play a critical role in the Hurricanes' success. The Miami native could emerge as an unforgettable local legend, especially if the team manages to advance to the Peach Bowl and play for a chance to compete in the National Championship.

It's going to be a great game with tons of anticipation building up.
