Injury Report

UM:

Sophomore tight end Luka Gilbert was initially ruled out for the season (undisclosed injury) before fall camp.

In Monday’s media availability, Mario Cristobal announced that junior cornerback Romanas “OJ” Frederique Jr. will be sidelined “for quite a while” with a “pretty significant injury.” It occurred in the Hurricanes’ first drive of the season opener against Stanford last Friday. Frederique Jr. went for a tackle, but his left shoulder made contact with junior tight end Benji Blackburn’s knee, and it appeared to have dislocated while heading to the locker room.

Cristobal mentioned that sophomore cornerback Ja’Boree Antoine will miss a chunk of the season. Also, junior safety Dylan Day could return tonight against the Rattlers; if not, he’s expected to make his season debut next Friday against Wake Forest.

Both players didn’t appear in last Friday’s game against Stanford.

Junior running back Jordan Lyle could be available for the Hurricanes’ home opener. He was arrested on Aug. 13 for a July incident involving law enforcement. Lyle was initially charged with fleeing and eluding an officer and reckless driving. It was reported on Wednesday that he will only face a misdemeanor for reckless driving.

However, it’s unclear if Lyle will face any potential dismissal or team punishment. He missed last Friday’s game against Stanford and didn’t appear to travel to California.

Rattlers:

Quarterback Isaiah Knowles was ruled out for the remainder of the college football season with a right thumb injury. It initially occurred during last Sunday’s 31-13 loss against South Carolina State.

Game Notes

Without Knowles initiating the offense, Dustin Fletcher is expected to take over. He has five years of limited college football experience. With the Citadel Bulldogs, Fletcher completed 27 of 45 passes and threw for 254 yards and a touchdown.

The Hurricanes will look the run the ball efficiently, which was a struggle against Stanford's defense, who stacked the line of scrimmage. It will be another test for the offensive line, who proved to be solid in pass protection.
