Recently-acquired Miami Heat player Klay Thompson was among those in attendance for Saturday's Hurricanes game against Florida State at Hard Rock Stadium
The Miami Hurricanes are used to seeing a star-studded lineup of alumni at their big games.
On Saturday, that group spilled over into a new arena. The Hurricanes' game against the Florida State Seminoles attracted the interest of Miami Heat star Klay Thompson. He was captured by cameras on the sidelines at the start of one of the best rivalries in college football, maybe all of sports.
Among the others in attendance were Hurricanes greats Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp and Devin Hester.
Thompson was signed by the Heat this offseason after playing last season for the Dallas Mavericks. He is mostly known for his years with the Golden State Warriors when he teamed with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green to win four championships. Thompson and Curry were known as the "Splash Brothers" when they were teammates.
They won their last championship during the 2022 season with the Warriors before going their separate ways in 2024 after spending 13 years as teammates. The Heat are hoping are he can bring them back to national relevance after being a Play-In Tournament for the last five seasons.
In the summer, they made a huge move by acquiring two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for promising players Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Tyler Herro and Kasparas Jakuncionis and a draft pick.
Thompson's appearance isn't the first time the Heat have shown love for a Hurricanes team with title aspirations. During the Big Three era of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the three All-Stars were always sitting courtside for the UM basketball team when it was among the best NCAA teams.
It made sense for so many stars to attend Saturday's game Hard Rock Stadium. Last year the Hurricanes fell just short of the program's first national title since 2001 when they lost in the College Football Playoff championship game against the Indiana Hoosiers.
Now, the Hurricanes enter tonight's game with an undefeated 5-0 record against the Seminoles. They are ranked No. 3 in the latest Associated Press poll.
The Hurricanes received some good news before their game started when the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs were upset by their Southeaster Conference rival Auburn Tigers. If the Hurricanes win and the No. 2 Notre Fighting Irish fall to the Top 10 BYU Cougars, UM would then take over the No. 1 spot.
So, this could be an eventful night for the Hurricanes and their fans.
