After winning the ACC at Duke, Darian Mensah joins a loaded Miami Hurricanes offense. He is surrounded by elite weapons and record-breaking stats, eyeing a national title run.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes needed a veteran quarterback following the National Championship game. As Carson Beck was without extra NCAA eligibility, the program would have to explore the open market. They missed out on a couple of high-value candidates, including an attempt to draw Ty Simpson away from the 2026 NFL Draft, before striking gold with redshirt junior Darian Mensah.
The 21-year-old is coming off a career season with the Duke Blue Devils: completing 334 of 500 passes, 66.8 completion percentage, and leading the Atlantic Coast Conference by throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, including six interceptions, appearing in 14 games, all starts. Mensah led the program to its first ACC Football Championship since 1989.
After a successful tenure in North Carolina, the All-ACC quarterback embarks on a new adventure in South Florida.
Among the Power Four quarterbacks, Mensah threw the second-most touchdowns, had the 12th-best passing grade with 85.0, and completed the seventh-most “big-time throws” with 28, according to PFF College. Given the latest resume, the Hurricanes’ offense is projected to be among the most explosive in the nation.
It’s the third consecutive year that the program secured a top-market quarterback. However, Mensah is looking to produce the best results compared to Cam Ward and Beck, which would be winning a National Championship. Regardless of the high expectations, he is looking to deliver.
High-quality weapons will surround Mensah from all over the field. The program revamped the wide receiver core around homegrown star sophomore Malachi Toney with redshirt junior Vandrevius Jacobs, redshirt junior Cam Vaughn, and former Blue Devils redshirt senior Cooper Barkate. He was Mensah’s top receiver at Duke, looking to keep building on chemistry. Plus, Joshua Moore and Daylyn Upshaw are expected to take on expanded roles and significant playing time as sophomores compared to when they were freshmen.
In the backfield, Mensah will hand the ball primarily to homegrown star senior running back Mark Fletcher Jr. He had a historic run in the College Football Playoffs: rushing 75 times for a record-breaking 507 yards, scoring three total touchdowns in four games.
The Hurricanes retained the entire running back core: redshirt junior CharMar Brown, sophomore Girard Pringle Jr., and junior Jordan Lyle, with the addition of freshman Javian Mallory.
Mensah has significant talent to work with, which should translate to success on the field and a boost in NFL Draft stock. An opportunity presents itself for him to be the best quarterback in college football. The new journey will commence where it all started, in California against the Stanford Cardinal on Sept. 4, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
