After surviving two ACL tears and eight years of eligibility, veteran linebacker Mohamed Toure returns to anchor a championship-caliber defense with elite physicality and unmatched experience.
MIAMI, Fla. – In college sports, usually players stick around for three to five years. However, Mohamed Toure is set to make an unprecedented mark. The Miami Hurricanes linebacker will spend eight years in college football following the upcoming season.
It took unique circumstances for the longtime veteran to last this far.
Toure’s college journey started in 2019 at Rutgers. He only appeared in two games as a freshman – redshirted to preserve NCAA eligibility. The following year, Toure had a more productive season: 20 total tackles, 13 solos and seven assists, five tackles for loss, a 13-yard interception against Purdue, and led the Scarlet Knights with 4.5 sacks in nine games.
In 2020, the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to all winter sports athletes in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Toure would’ve been set to play a maximum of six total seasons of college football. However, adversity struck the New Jersey native in an unkind way.
Toure suffered two significant knee injuries, which kept him sidelined for the 2022 and 2024 seasons. He would obtain medical waivers for both and carve out an extensive college career unlike any other. Ahead of the 2025 season, Toure entered the transfer portal and found a new home in South Florida.
The longtime college linebacker had a remarkable season as a starter in defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman’s unit. Toure led the Hurricanes with 84 total tackles, 38 solos and 46 assists, three tackles for loss, six passes defended, and two sacks, appearing in all 16 games. Following the National Championship game, he had the opportunity to declare for the NFL Draft.
Instead, Toure decided to return to the Coral Gables program for an eighth and final season.
The Hurricanes’ scoring defense was ranked the fifth-best among the Football Bowl Subdivision. Toure’s return and longtime college football will be valuable for another National Championship chase. He was mentioned on Phil Steele’s All-Atlantic Coast Conference list.
Although the journey is unique, Toure never faltered in the challenge of returning from two major injuries. He will have the opportunity to end this current chapter on a high note. Ahead of fall camp and the regular season, the Hurricanes are established National Championship contenders.
Toure’s brings back physicality and an old-school style of hard-hitting tackles. Despite the departures of edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr., the 24-year-old is looking to maintain order on the field.
