Despite missing the season, Marcus Allen remains the Miami Hurricanes' heartbeat, inspiring his team from the sidelines as they navigate the NCAA Tournament.

The Miami Hurricanes make final preparations before facing the Missouri Tigers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night. It’s the program’s first appearance since reaching the “Final Four” for the first very time on April 1, 2023.

However, much has changed since then, including Jai Lucas becoming the new head coach and a completely fresh roster. As the team looks to compete, one of the players won’t be able to suit up, but will provide support, and that’s Marcus Allen. The 21-year-old appeared in eight games this season, averaging 5.3 points on 42.4 percent shooting, 38.5 percent from three-point range, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 18.9 minutes off the bench.

Allen provided a three-and-D element to the roster. However, the sophomore forward experienced a life-changing moment. It was announced on Dec. 19, 2025, that Allen would miss the remainder of the season due to a non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, which is a type of blood cancer.

Regardless, the Hurricanes continue to show tremendous support, and he hasn’t stopped showing up to practices or games. Allen will be in attendance at St. Louis, Missouri, for the NCAA Tournament matchup on the sidelines. Coach Lucas elaborated on the importance of Allen simply being present.

“It was a tough, tough situation,” he said on Thursday. “It’s information and something you never want to hear. When everything happened with Marcus, the biggest thing with Marcus is [that] he wanted to still be treated like Marcus. We had to make sure we did that around the program. For us, as a team, it’s just giving us the appreciation value that nothing is promised and you can’t take anything for granted. You have to go out and attack every day. Whenever Marcus is around, even before he’s diagnosed with cancer, he was kind of the heartbeat of the team. He’s the guy you always hear and the guy everybody kind of gravitated towards. It’s the same thing when he’s around. Him being on this trip with us and being able to be back and forth in between treatments and practicing keeps the guys and keeps the perspective in the program in the right place.”

Allen came to the Hurricanes through the transfer portal during last offseason, at the same time as seniors Tru Donaldson, Malik Reneau, and Ernest Udeh Jr., plus junior Tru Washington. Despite missing time on the court, he still played a role in the program’s significant turnaround.
