Despite losing NFL-caliber talent, the Miami Hurricanes are reloading with explosive edge rushers and homegrown linemen ready to uphold Mario Cristobal’s physical standard at the line of scrimmage.
MIAMI, Fla. – Mario Cristobal ensured the Miami Hurricanes established an identity to dominate both sides at the line of scrimmage. As a former offensive tackle, he has firsthand knowledge of what it takes to have success in the trenches.
Last season, the offensive line ranked among the nation’s best – featuring All-American right tackle Francis Mauigoa. Meanwhile, the defensive unit delivered elite pressure – led by edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr.
The Hurricanes lost all three star trench players, among others, to the NFL Draft. Despite leaving serious voids, Cristobal is confident the production won’t suffer any setbacks.
“Let's go and find out,” he said on The Joe Rose Show. “The moment we signed Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor, we knew right away you had to be on a mission to get the next great one. In college football, if [players] are really good, they’re gone in three years. We’ve had them in the program. They haven’t been able to play as much because [Mesidor and Bain] don’t want to come off the field.”
Marquise Lightfoot is arguably the biggest candidate among the Hurricanes' roster for a breakout season. The 6-5 and 230-pound edge rusher logged 25 total tackles, 16 solos and nine assists, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 15 games (one start). In a limited role, Lightfoot proved to be impactful.
As a projected starter, the Chicago native will have more opportunities to carve out explosive stoppage plays.
Sharing snaps with Lightfoot are Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II and Hayden Lowe.
The offensive line has more questions compared to the defensive side. Cristobal is replacing four starters, but instead of scrambling through the transfer portal, he’s confident in the in-house talent stepping up.
Matthew McCoy, Ryan Rodriguez, and Samson Okunlola are projected starters with experience. Meanwhile, freshman and five-star recruit Jackson Cantwell is expected to be thrown into the fire right away at left tackle.
The Hurricanes’ offense has the potential to be among the nation’s best. However, protecting quarterback Darian Mensah is critical to reaching those great heights.
Fall camp is approaching and both units will have opportunities to strengthen. The success starts and ends at the line of scrimmage, especially for a Cristobal-led program. Elite talent departs, but familiar names are climbing the rankings.
The Hurricanes aren’t worried about the trench production or talent. National Championship aspirations surround the Coral Gables campus, but it starts at the line of scrimmage.
