After landing Duke standout Darian Mensah to lead a championship charge, Mario Cristobal reveals why the Miami Hurricanes are finally ready to stop relying on the transfer portal.
MIAMI, Fla. – Over the last couple of years, transfer-portal quarterbacks played a key role in the Miami Hurricanes’ success. Cam Ward and Carson Beck led the program to double-digit win seasons, but no titles to show for it. However, Darian Mensah is expected to deliver.
Coming off an All-Atlantic Coast Conference-caliber season at Duke, the individual success is looking to translate to Coral Gables and Hard Rock Stadium. He completed 334 of 500 passes (66.8 percent) and threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, including six interceptions, in 14 games. Mensah led the Blue Devils program to its first football conference title since 1989.
Following the National Championship game, the Hurricanes were in search of a veteran quarterback to continue contending for titles. Mensah entered the transfer portal before the window closed – followed by legal battles with Duke’s football program – and found a new home with greater aspirations.
In Wednesday’s ACC Kickoff Media Day, Mario Cristobal pulled back the curtain on the search for Beck’s replacement, which ultimately is Mensah.
“We felt that the team was set in so many areas,” he said. “When Darian hit the portal, we felt like this is a guy we’d like to pursue. We saw his level of talent and play. What really took us by surprise – in a great way – was what an incredible young man he is. His levels of leadership, care factor, time invested in his craft, football and human IQ – just an elite person.”
Mensah is expected to be a one-and-done situation – similar to Ward and Beck – and declare for the 2027 NFL Draft. However, unlike both former offensive orchestrators, he has the choice to return to college football next year. Regardless, Cristobal believes the Hurricanes are prepared to rely internally for quarterbacks.
“We feel, going forward, that we are set in that room from a high school standpoint,” he added. “With what we have on the roster and coming in.”
Luke Nickel, Judd Anderson, and Dereon Coleman are a few notable quarterbacks already in “The U” uniform, plus 2027 five-star commit Israel Abrams. The Hurricanes won’t need to look to the transfer portal for another quarterback unless the right opportunity arises, as Cristobal mentioned.
A new standard was established last season. Mensah will be tasked, along with a few other veterans, with raising the bar and delivering titles. It starts with winning the ACC, then carving out another run for the National Championship – finishing with different results.
