After losing Carson Beck to the NFL, coach Mario Cristobal reveals why securing veteran transfer Darian Mensah was vital to stabilizing a young, developing Miami Hurricanes quarterback room.

Miami, FL. – Before Darian Mensah arrived at the Coral Gables campus, there were concerns about who would be the next Miami Hurricanes quarterback. Following the National Championship game, Carson Beck was set to depart and declared for the 2026 NFL Draft. He overcame personal adversity–recovering from offseason elbow surgery, didn’t throw until fall camp, and went on to leave a significant mark on the program.

Beck completed 338 of 467 passes, led the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 72.4 completion percentage, throwing for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns, including 12 interceptions, starting in all 16 games. The 24-year-old was selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the No. 65 pick in the third round.

In an exclusive interview with Jacksonville’s Sports Radio, coach Mario Cristobal revealed that the quarterback room before Mensah arrived was not ready to take over.

“You have to assess your roster and be honest with yourself,” he said. “Where do we lack what we need to play at the highest level? We feel great about our quarterback room. It’s just not at that level just yet. We do feel it’ll be there in a year, but right now, we needed a veteran. Quarterback was the one we felt we needed to get a guy with experience that’s played at a high level and that could really benefit himself and us in this system. Once Darian Mensah entered the portal, we set our sights on him. We are thrilled to have him as part of our organization.”

Mensah had an All-ACC caliber season with the Duke Blue Devils: completed 334 of 500 passes, 66.8 completion percentage, and led the ACC by throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, including six interceptions, starting in all 14 games. He led the program to its first ACC Football Championship since 1989.

Before entering the transfer portal, the Hurricanes were looking at inexperienced quarterbacks: Luke Nickel, Judd Anderson, Joe Borchers, Vinny Gonzalez, and Dereon Coleman. Emory Williams departed from the program after three seasons, now with the East Carolina Pirates.

Mensah is expected to be a one-and-done situation, similar to Beck and Cam Ward. In the meantime, the 21-year-old will serve as a valuable veteran on and off the field, boosting the development of the younger quarterbacks who will be looking to run the Hurricanes’ future offense.

The program has done a significant job at developing players at other positions, but it’s time to translate over to arguably the most critical in football.
