Mario Cristobal ignited a national recruiting frenzy by flipping four elite prospects from powerhouses like Georgia and LSU, propelling the Miami Hurricanes' 2027 class into the top three.
MIAMI, Fla. – Part of the Miami Hurricanes’ success on the high school recruiting trail was commitment flipping. Coach Mario Cristobal, Football Executive Dennis Smith, and the staff convinced four other highly-ranked players to leave other competitive programs.
It started with five-star cornerback Donte Wright choosing “The U” over Georgia. Afterwards, he set the tone for other recruits to flip. Four-star cornerback Ai’King Hall followed from Oregon, then five-star edge rusher Jaiden Bryant from LSU, and finally four-star wide receiver Eli Woodward from USC.
According to Rivals, the Hurricanes securing Wright, Bryant, and Hall ranked among the top 2027 flips. However, it was headlined by five-star-plus running back Kemon Spell going from Penn State to Georgia. The Hurricanes’ three flips were the most among any program listed.
By securing Wright (California), Bryant (South Carolina), and Hall’s (Alabama) commitments, the Coral Gables program has three recruits ranked the best in their state. Although Woodard isn’t listed, pairing him alongside local five-star wide receiver Nick Lennear adds another weapon and playmaker for quarterback Israel Abrams.
The Hurricanes currently have 20 commits – fewer than Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, and Florida – and the 2027 group ranked third nationally, according to On3 and 247Sports Composite. It speaks to the great level of future talent the program soon has coming in.
Coming off a National Championship appearance, the University of Miami became a top destination for recruits. Although the program underwent years of mediocrity, it took one breakthrough 13-3 season to change “The U’s” image.
The Hurricanes have six top-100 prospects, including 15 blue-chipers. Also, 60 percent of the recruits are from outside of Florida. There was a point when the Hurricanes would miss out on elite in-state prospects, such as Chaminade-Madonna graduate Jeremiah Smith.
Despite the early challenges of rebuilding the program, coach Cristobal managed to find local talents – Francis Mauigoa, Reuben Bain Jr., and Mark Fletcher Jr. – who believed in the vision and helped solidify the turnaround. The three players mentioned were critical in the team’s historic run to the National Championship.
Mauigoa and Bain Jr. wound up as first-round selections in the NFL Draft and Fletcher Jr. returned for a final season.
The 2027 class will enter a situation where contending for championships is the standard. Although all are talented, they will look to earn everything on the field, including playing time. The future of football around the Coral Gables campus is brighter than ever before.
