Mario Cristobal’s powerhouse 2027 class eyes North Carolina standout Jalaythan Mayfield. As a July 19 decision looms, the Miami Hurricanes battle Georgia and Indiana for a tackling machine.
MIAMI, Fla. – In the last couple of weeks, the Miami Hurricanes dominated the high school recruiting trail. The program’s 2027 recruiting class currently has 19 verbal commits, including a flip from five-star edge rusher Jaiden Bryant away from LSU. Despite having fewer players than the Oklahoma Sooners and Florida Gators, the Hurricanes ranked second, according to On3 and 247Sports Composite.
It’s arguably the best group coach Mario Cristobal and the staff assembled. However, there’s still the possibility of landing extra talent, such as Jalaythan Mayfield. He’s a four-star linebacker who currently attends Lincolnton High School, a public institution located in Lincoln County, North Carolina.
As a senior, Mayfield stacked 152 total tackles, 125 solos and 27 assists, 26 tackles for loss, six sacks, two hurries, and two passes defended in 13 games. He’s listed at 6-2, 235 pounds, and ranked 228th nationally, 20th among linebackers, and ninth in the state of North Carolina for the 2027 class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings.
It was reported that three programs are in the final running in Mayfield’s recruiting process: Georgia Bulldogs, Indiana Hoosiers, and Hurricanes. He took an official visit to each campus and facility. The decision will be announced on July 19th.
Mayfield received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Alabama Crimson Tide, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Texas A&M Aggies, Oregon Ducks, Auburn Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Ole Miss Rebels, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Louisville Cardinals, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and Virginia Tech Hokies, among others.
It’s unlikely for the elite linebacker to join the Hurricanes’ recruiting group after securing commitments from two others – Aroson “AJ” Randle Jr. and Noah Glover – and no longer pursuing five-star Kaden Henderson. Mayfield has a 90 percent chance of committing to the Hoosiers, according to Rivals, plus the contributions of three insiders.
Mayfield’s official visit to the University of Miami was on May 29, shortly before Bryant flipped. He was joined by a few Hurricanes commits, including Nick Lennear, Demarco Jenkins, Ai’King Hall, Donte Wright, Sean Tatum, Ezekiel Ayangbile, and Jaylyn Jones Jr.
The Hurricanes are near the completion of the 2027 recruiting group. After flipping a couple of five-stars, plus having six top-100 prospects, the future of football in Coral Gables appears brighter.
Mayfield’s talents and development will be heading to either the Southeastern Conference or the Big 12.
