Mario Cristobal’s recruiting surge faces a major test as 6-foot-7 standout Oluwasemilore Olubobola prepares to choose between the surging Miami Hurricanes and historic rival Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes made a significant jump on the high school recruiting trail after securing a commitment from four-star defensive lineman Ezekiel Ayangbile and flipping five-star cornerback Donte Wright from the Georgia Bulldogs. The program has re-entered the top-10 rankings between On3 and 247Sports. After missing out on some prospects, they have made up for lost ground, with still more of a hill to climb.
There are still several highly-ranked high school recruits looking to commit to a school, including Oluwasemilore Olubobola. He is a five-star offensive lineman who currently attends St. Peter’s Prep, a private institution located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Olubobola primarily started at left tackle as a junior.
The five-star prospect is listed at 6-7, 295 pounds, has an 86-inch wingspan, and ranked 25th nationally, third among offensive tackles, and second from New Jersey for the 2027 class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s received interest and scholarship offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Texas A&M Aggies, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, Virginia Tech Hokies, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Texas Longhorns, Tennessee Volunteers, Auburn Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Minnesota Golden Gophers, among several others.
After a long recruiting process, Olubobola is set to announce an official decision on Tuesday, May 12. It will be streamed live on Rivals’ YouTube channel.
The five-star offensive tackle made just one visit to the Coral Gables campus and facility on March 31. Around that time, the Hurricanes just began spring practices, which concluded on April 18, plus an exhibition game.
However, all signs point to Olubobola committing to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a historic rival to the South Florida program. He traveled to South Bend, Indiana, to attend the Blue-Gold game on April 25. The Fighting Irish currently have 14 hard commits, including a couple of offensive linemen. The group is ranked 10th nationally and has a 92.21 class score, according to On3.
Despite the Hurricanes having three offensive linemen selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, including center James Brockermeyer signing with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent, it wasn’t enough to persuade Olubobola away from the Independent program.
The Coral Gables program has been focused on landing another five-star offensive tackle in Mark Matthews from St. Thomas Aquinas High School.
The Hurricanes look to retain the new momentum built after flipping Wright, which could set a whole new domino effect.
