As the Miami Hurricanes continue being aggressive on the recruiting scene, several high school players are narrowing down a long list of offers, including Junior James. He’s a defensive back who currently attends Thompson High School, a public institution located in Alabaster, Alabama.
James has recorded 66 total tackles, 45 solos and 21 assists, five tackles for loss, three interceptions, and seven passes defended as a junior playing at free safety and cornerback. He’s currently a four-star recruit, listed at 6-3, 190 pounds, and ranked 224th nationally, 21st among safeties, and 11th in the state of Alabama for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings.
It was reported on Friday, March 13, by Raising Champions, his management, that James is drawn to 12 programs: Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Oregon Ducks, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns, Ohio State Buckeyes, Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, Auburn Tigers, Indiana Hoosiers, BYU Cougars, and Hurricanes. Others to present offers, including the South Florida Bulls, Duke Blue Devils, Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and more.
James made previous unofficial visits: two with the Auburn, one with South Florida and Florida, plus a January visit with Alabama, then an official visit scheduled with them on June 12.
Coming off a National Championship, the Hurricanes have emerged as a main attraction for several high school recruits. They were a finalist for five-star athlete Honor Fa’alave Johnson, who recently committed to the USC Trojans. It shows how much the program has turned around and how many are paying attention.
The Hurricanes’ defense significantly improved last season under first-year defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. He was in the running for the Broyles Award, which honors the top assistant in the nation. Despite falling short, the 44-year-old provided leadership on the sidelines and established a defensive identity built on physicality and aggression.
However, the program is currently without a defensive backs coach. Zac Etheridge departed after one season due to accepting a job with the Arizona Cardinals on coach Mike LaFleur’s staff.
Pulling James away from a local university with a rich football history, such as Alabama, will be a challenge. However, both programs are currently on different trajectories.
The Hurricanes look to remain competitive, with the defense expecting to translate over to next season, despite losing key pieces in edge rushers Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor. As they continue building the recruiting class of 2027, an opportunity to add more defensive talent presents itself.
