Last season, the Miami Hurricanes looked to establish the run game against every opponent. Coming off a National Championship, star running back Mark Fletcher Jr. made history: rushing 75 times for 507 yards, a new College Football Playoff record, scoring three total touchdowns. As the 21-year-old returns for his senior year, so does the rest of the core of CharMar Brown, Girard Pringle Jr., and Jordan Lyle.
Not only will the team have the opportunity to keep the trend going for next season, but for the foreseeable future as well. It was reported on Wednesday that four-star running back Nigel Newkirk is eyeing six programs: Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, USC Trojans, and Hurricanes.
The prospect currently attends Gainesville High School, a public institution located in Hall County, Georgia. As a junior, Newkirk rushed 184 times for 1,496 yards, scoring 20 total touchdowns in 14 games. Plus, catching 12 passes for 128 yards.
Newkirk is listed at 5-11, 200 pounds, and ranked 329th nationally, 26th among running backs, and 50th in the state of Georgia for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s received interest and offers from the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Missouri Tigers, among others.
The four-star recruit made several unofficial visits, including with the Hurricanes on Oct. 25, 2025. It was a game night, resulting in a 42–7 victory over the Stanford Cardinal. Newkirk does have an official visit scheduled with Alabama on May 29. Last season, the Crimson Tide were among the worst rushing offenses in the nation, averaging 104.1 yards a game during the regular season.
The Hurricanes recently announced the official hiring of running backs coach Favian Upshaw. He was a former college quarterback, but was rather known for his legs than arm. The 32-year-old will be responsible for further developing the young core, including Pringle Jr., who is entering his sophomore season. Adding a young talent such as Newkirk would propel the Hurricanes’ run game for the future.
The running back prospect has the speed and size to squeeze through gaps and carve out explosive plays, similar to Pringle Jr.
Part of the Hurricanes’ success with the run game was having a high-quality offensive line. Despite losing four starters in left tackle Markel Bell, right guard Anez Cooper, center James Brockermeyer, and All-American right tackle Francis Mauigoa, the next group is expected to produce similar results in terms of creating gaps and protection for All-ACC quarterback Darian Mensah.
Newkirk has the talent to provide an immediate impact for a team, but his decision will likely come at a later time.
