Mario Cristobal’s staff targets a tackling machine from Georgia as defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman looks to secure a physical cornerstone for the Miami Hurricanes’ surging 2027 recruiting class.
Miami, FL. – Following an active week on the high-school recruiting trail, the Miami Hurricanes continue to gain significant momentum. Despite missing out on local five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthew to Texas A&M, the program didn’t allow it to derail the future. The Hurricanes’ 2027 group continues to emerge as one of the nation’s best, with an opportunity to add more talent.
It was reported that three-star linebacker Drew Williams is close to reaching a final decision. He currently attends Sequoyah High School, a public institution located in Hickory Flat, Georgia. In two seasons as a sophomore and junior, Williams logged 190 total tackles, 131 solos and 59 assists, 18 tackles for loss, eight sacks, 22 hurries, and an interception in 22 total games, listed primarily as an inside linebacker, according to MaxPreps.
There are four programs listed in the final running: Oregon Ducks, Kentucky Wildcats, Florida Gators, and Hurricanes. Williams scheduled official summer visits with each school.
The three-star recruit is listed at 6-2, 210 pounds, and ranked 1,198th nationally, 112th among linebackers, and 126th in the state of Georgia for the 2027 class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He received interest and scholarship offers from numerous programs, including the South Florida Bulls, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Auburn Tigers, Virginia Tech Hokies, Vanderbilt Commodores, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Kansas State Wildcats, and Tulane Green Wave, among others.
Williams would be the first linebacker to join the Hurricanes’ 2027 group, pending Aroson “AJ” Randle’s commitment, which is set to be announced on Thursday live on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube Channel at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
The Georgia native is considering the opportunity to develop under defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Corey Hetherman. He successfully transformed the program’s scoring defenses from one of the worst to one of the very best in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The turnaround played a significant role in the team reaching the National Championship game.
Williams will visit the Coral Gables campus and facility on June 5.
The Hurricanes have an opportunity to leave a strong impression on the three-star linebacker, especially ahead from visit the University of Florida. They currently have 13 hard commits, ranked the sixth best in the nation, given a 93.15 class score.
Despite having an opportunity to play close to home, Williams appears prepared for a new chapter, which starts by finding a new home. The Hurricanes currently have a 15.5 percent chance of landing him, according to Rivals’ recruiting prediction machine. However, the recruitment process could change after the official visits.
