The Miami Hurricanes have found success in acquiring top-market quarterbacks through the transfer portal in recent years. It started with Cam Ward, who then became the first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, Carson Beck, who led the team to its first National Championship appearance in over two decades, and now with All-ACC Darian Mensah, who has high expectations after joining. Regardless of the trend, it’s only a short-term success.
In today’s college football world, it’s difficult to establish a foundation. However, by scouting and recruiting the right high school prospects, any program can achieve more in the long run. The Hurricanes accomplished that with edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., running back Mark Fletcher Jr., linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, and star wide receiver Malachi Toney.
Recruiting and developing a quarterback appears to be part of the plan, as it was reported on Wednesday, March 4, that four-star Israel Abrams is down to five schools: Auburn Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats, Purdue Boilermakers, Florida State Seminoles, and Hurricanes. He currently attends Montini Catholic High School, a private Roman Catholic college-preparatory institution, located in Lombard, Illinois. Abrams completed 233 of 340 passes, 68.5 percent, throwing for 4,072 yards and 40 touchdowns in 14 games.
Also, he’s a dual-threat quarterback, rushing 82 times for 224 yards, scoring 10 touchdowns.
Abrams is listed at 6-4, 194 pounds, and ranked 45th nationally, third in his position, and second in the state of Illinois for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. Several interested programs have presented offers, including the Illinois Fighting Illini, Michigan Wolverines, Ole Miss Rebels, Syracuse Orange, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, among many others.
Among the final five, Abrams already made a couple of unofficial visits with Purdue (March 7) and Kentucky (March 13), with a few more scheduled:
- Auburn: March 21
- Florida State: March 24
- Miami: March 31
Afterwards, Abrams will have a round of official visits with each program:
- Purdue: April 3
- Miami: May 29
- Auburn: June 5
- Florida State: June 12
- Kentucky: June 19
Abrams committed to playing in the Navy All-American and Polynesian Bowl games, both in January 2027.
The Hurricanes have an opportunity to land and develop an elite quarterback who can help compete in the long run.
The program preaches about developing and it should carry over to the one initiating the offense. They have a couple of other promising quarterbacks already on the roster in Luke Nickel and Dereon Coleman. However, continuing the transfer portal trend will likely push them to pursue other opportunities.
Perhaps Abrams helps to break the cycle.
