Fresh off a historic championship run and elite recruiting success, the Miami Hurricanes secure Mario Cristobal's future to cement "The U" as a perennial national title contender.
MIAMI, Fla. – Mario Cristobal and the University of Miami have reportedly agreed on a long-term contract extension, according to On3.
The news comes less than 24 hours before the Miami Hurricanes open fall camp. After taking over the helm ahead of the 2022 season, Cristobal has revived the program and established a new foundation.
Before taking the head coaching job, the Hurricanes had just one 10-win season since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004. However, the old sense of competing for National Championships essentially vanished. Although it took some time, Cristobal has turned “The U” around.
Following a 5-7 inaugural season, the former Hurricanes offensive tackle assembled a nationally top-10 2023 recruiting class, which featured Rueben Bain Jr., Francis Mauigoa, and Mark Fletcher Jr. They would become the core that rebuilt the Hurricanes for today’s version.
Cristobal then led the team to a 7-6 season. Despite the progression, he took things up a notch with the transfer portal. After searching the market for a quarterback, Cristobal stumbled upon Cam Ward. Together, they would carve out the beginning of “The U’s” turnaround.
Ward had a remarkable one-season stint in 2024, throwing for 4,313 yards and an ACC-leading 39 touchdowns. He earned All-American honors and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. Despite leading the Coral Gables program to its first 10-win season since 2017, a couple of late-season losses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse led to not qualifying for the ACC Championship game and the College Football Playoffs.
Despite a disappointing ending, there was a blueprint to build on.
Cristobal found another top-market transfer portal quarterback in Carson Beck.
Despite recovering from a UCL injury and missing all of spring practices, he took a chance on the sixth-year senior. Beck led the Hurricanes to a 5-0 start to the 2025 season. However, a couple of losses to Louisville and SMU put all playoff hopes on the line. Beck led the Hurricanes to a four-game win streak to close the regular season and the program earned a chance to compete for a National Championship.
After beating Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Ole Miss, “The U” was back on college football’s biggest stage. Despite falling short against Indiana, Cristobal’s vision was coming to fruition.
Coming off a historic 13-3 season and fall camp opening, the Hurricanes are contenders for the National Championship. Without Cristobal’s leadership and philosophy, the program might not be in the position it is today or for the foreseeable future.
