Mario Cristobal shook up the Miami Hurricanes depth chart as fall camp opened, confirming the departure of former five-star recruit Hayden Lowe and a season-ending injury for tight end Luka Gilbert.
MIAMI, Fla. – Ahead of Tuesday’s fall camp opening, Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal announced several roster changes on The Joe Rose Show on 104.3 WQAM radio.
Hayden Lowe
Edge rusher and former five-star recruit Hayden Lowe is no longer on the roster.
“University of Miami and Hayden Lowe have parted ways,” Cristobal said. “We certainly wish him the best and his future endeavors.”
After months of speculation and rumors surrounding the California native, including an absence in spring practices, it was all made official. Lowe didn’t play for the Hurricanes last season because of an undisclosed injury. He was projected to play a meaningful role with fall camp opening, especially with the departures of Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. to the NFL.
Coming from Oaks Christian High School, a college-preparatory institution in Los Angeles County, Lowe logged 159 total tackles, 88 solos and 71 assists, 42 tackles for loss, 24.5 sacks, and two interceptions in 37 total games over four years. He received several Power Four scholarships, including from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, and Oregon, among several others.
Lowe originally committed to the University of South Carolina before officially flipping to “The U” in early November of 2024. He has yet to make any sort of statement.
Luka Gilbert
Along with the Lowe news, Cristobal shared that sophomore tight end Luka Gilbert will miss the 2026 college football season. He suffered an undisclosed injury during the summer. Gilbert was the projected backup to junior Elija Lofton. He played in 10 games last season, primarily on special teams. Cristobal mentioned that Gilbert should be ready for the 2027 college football season.
It presents an open opportunity for several other tight ends to step up, including freshmen Gavin Mueller and Israel Briggs.
Jontavius Wyman
Similar to Lowe, freshman cornerback Jontavius Wyman is no longer on the Hurricanes’ roster. He formally announced the decision in a post on X on Aug. 1. He was a three-star recruit coming from Jonesboro High School, a public institution in Clayton County, Georgia. As a senior, Wyman logged 50 total tackles, 34 solos and 16 assists, two tackles for loss, and three interceptions in 11 games.
Herbert Scroggins III
The final news: sophomore edge rusher Herbert Scroggins III has cleared from an undisclosed injury. Given Lowe’s sudden departure, it presents an opportunity to climb the depth chart even higher. Last season, Scroggins III logged four tackles, a solo and three assists, in 11 games played.
Despite the sudden moves, the Hurricanes are still National Championship contenders. Fall camp has commenced and the action is only getting started.
