Five-star forward Caleb Gaskins headlines a revamped roster, bringing elite versatility and scoring to Coral Gables as the hometown hero looks to spark an immediate postseason run.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program has been successful in utilizing the transfer portal to revamp the roster. They have landed a couple of top-market players in guard Acaden Lewis and Somto Cyril, plus forward DeSean Goode, guard Quin Berger, guard Nick Dorn, and guard Brent Bland. The Hurricanes’ transfer portal class is ranked No. 23 with an 82.67 average performance rating, according to On3.
Regardless of the new veterans added, the program is bringing in a highly touted freshman to the roster. Caleb Gaskins is a five-star forward who currently attends Christopher Columbus High School, a college preparatory school in Miami-Dade County. He averaged 18 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 62 games over two seasons.
Gaskins received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, and Alabama Crimson Tide, among several others. He chose to stay close to home and never flipped, despite significant changes, such as the hiring of head coach Jai Lucas.
In the final Rivals150, which ranks the best 150 high school basketball prospects, Gaskings wound up at No. 13.
“There is a smooth and calming factor to Caleb Gaskins’ game,” Jaime Shaw, Rivals National Analyst, said. “The 6-foot-8 forward is never rushed, and he always seems to be in position to make a play. In this one, Gaskins shot the ball very well, feet set, great balance and hit three or four of them from behind the arc. He moves the ball well and I really like the versatility he brings on the defensive end. There are a lot of connecting pieces he brings.”
Gaskins is projected to be a starter for the Hurricanes, but coach Lucas will likely have him earn the role. The 37-year-old proved not to shy away from playing freshman right away, such as former five-star recruit Shelton Henderson this past season, starting in all 35 games. Gaskins can play either as a small or power forward.
The Miami native will need to adjust to playing a specific role, especially with all the established talent surrounding him.
Gaskins is likely to deliver an immediate impact, enhancing the Hurricanes’ defense and providing stable scoring.
Coming off a historic 26-9 turnaround season, reaching the NCAA Tournament, coach Lucas looks to take the program further. After establishing a new winning culture and standard, plus bringing in significant pieces, success is aligned on the court in Coral Gables.
