Jai Lucas looks to solidify the Miami Hurricanes' frontcourt by pursuing versatile LSU big man Robert Miller III, a high-upside presence capable of providing much-needed rim protection and depth.

Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program underwent a successful offseason, projected to be one of the nation’s best ahead of next year. They retained key players in Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen, landed a couple of top-market transfer portal acquisitions in guard Acaden Lewis and Somto Cyril, then filled out most of the roster with players who can make a severe impact: DeSean Goode, Quin Berger, Nick Dorn, and Brent Bland.

Plus, a couple of high school recruits will be joining, such as five-star forward Caleb Gaskins and Chris Birden. However, there are still a couple of open roster spots left for coach Jai Lucas to fill. The search for a backup big remains a need, but a candidate has reportedly emerged.

The Hurricanes are on “watch” alert for LSU Tigers transfer portal Robert Miller III, according to CanesInSight. He averaged 6.1 points on 65.7 percent shooting, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 19.3 minutes, appearing in 31 games, including two starts. He is listed at 6-10, 220 pounds, and from Houston, Texas. Miller III has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

The 19-year-old can impact the game in numerous ways. He can put the ball down and create when needed, play in pick-and-roll action, and can be utilized as a lob threat. Miller III is a presence in the paint, which fits coach Lucas’ system.

The Texas native was a four-star recruit coming from Pasadena Memorial High School, a public institution located in Harris County. He averaged 19.3 points on 55 percent shooting, 13.1 rebounds, 5.4 blocks, 1.9 assists, and 1.5 steals in 32 games as a junior, according to MaxPreps.

Miller III received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, Houston Cougars, Kansas State Wildcats, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, and SMU Mustangs, among a few others. He committed to LSU on Sept. 22, 2023.

The Hurricanes need a reliable center after not having one last season. Behind Ernest Udeh Jr. was Salih Altuntas, who provided little consistency on the court. He entered the transfer portal and committed to the Saint Mary’s Gaels. Oftentimes, coach Lucas went with a small-ball lineup to make up for the lack of depth.

Miller III would fill a roster’s need and deliver a presence in the paint.

The Hurricanes already have the intangibles to be competitive among the nation’s best, but adding a proven backup center would elevate the team’s chances.
