Following the departure of two first-round stars, Jason Taylor’s relentless defensive line reloads with Marquise Lightfoot and Damon Wilson II to cement the Miami Hurricanes as the nation’s premier edge-rusher factory.
MIAMI, Fla. – In college sports, certain programs are known for developing superstars at a certain position. Historically, Alabama is known for running backs and Ohio State for wide receivers. The Miami Hurricanes are heavily tied to defense, but the specific success with edge rushers might be the biggest trend.
Last season, Akeem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. emerged as college football’s top defensive duo. They delivered dominance and disruption at the line of scrimmage. Coming off career seasons, both declared for the 2026 NFL Draft and were first-round selections.
Despite the severe void, the Hurricanes have nothing short of talent at the position. Among the returns is Chicago native Marquise Lightfoot. Despite playing behind Mesidor and Bain Jr., he still managed to make an impact on the field.
Lightfoot logged 25 total tackles, 16 solos and nine assists, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 15 games, including a start last season. Projected as a starter, the 20-year-old is expected to carve out more explosive stoppage plays and disruption. Alongside him is Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II.
Coming off a productive season with the Tigers, the local Venice native is looking to take the same path to success as Mesidor and Bain Jr. Last season, he logged 23 total tackles, nine solos and 14 assists, 9.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and a three-yard interception against Vanderbilt in 13 games. Wilson II earned All-Southeastern Conference Second Team honors.
The incoming senior is projected as a Hurricanes starter. He’s expected to make a significant jump in production and lock down first-round draft stock.
Armondo Blount is another returning veteran looking to work with more snaps. Similar to Lightfoot, he was impactful in a limited role. In 15 games, Blount logged 17 total tackles, seven solos and 10 assists, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.
Behind them are freshmen Hayden Lowe (redshirt) and Asharri Charles. Even without Mesidor and Bain Jr., the Hurricanes shouldn’t experience any regression in the pass-rushing game. According to CBS Sports, the program’s best position group ahead of the 2026 regular season is at edge rusher.
Part of the success is having Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor developing the talent. As a former pass rusher, he understands what it takes to compete and be effective at the highest level. Taylor has given the Hurricanes a gauntlet of talent at the position.
