Miami Hurricanes' new transfer receiver Cam Vaughn made an instant splash, snagging a spectacular deep ball that ignited fan excitement and showcased his game-breaking potential.

An intriguing aspect about the Miami Hurricanes, as spring training unfolds, will be the development of the new wide receiver core. Outside of a few returning players in Joshua Moore, Daylyn Upshaw, and homegrown star Malachi Toney, the program added All-ACC Cooper Barkate, Vandrevius Jacobs, and Cam Vaughn through the transfer portal.

As CJ Daniels and Keelan Marion depart for the upcoming NFL Draft, the offense is expected to make a jump in production, given the talented depth at the position. However, Vaughn specifically caught the attention of online fans after the Hurricanes posted a video of him on Tuesday, March 24, catching a deep pass by All-ACC quarterback Darian Mensah while Xavier Lucas was playing tight coverage.

The Georgia native transferred to the Hurricanes after one season with the West Virginia Mountaineers. He caught 35 passes for 541 yards, scoring four total touchdowns in 12 games. Vaughn was named Preseason All-Big 12 Third Team. The Mountaineers went on to finish with a 4-8 overall record.

Vaughn adds depth to the Hurricanes’ receiver core, projected to play in a reserve role behind Barkate. He’s proven to be dynamic, especially as a redshirt freshman with the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. The former unranked recruit caught 48 passes for 803 yards, scoring five total touchdowns over two seasons in 17 games, including eight starts.

After entering the transfer portal, Vaughn received offers from the Hurricanes and Florida Gators. Coming off a National Championship appearance, he ultimately joined a program that’s looking to remain in contention.

Last season, the Hurricanes’ offense was inconsistent, especially with quarterback Carson Beck recovering from a UCL injury midseason. However, with all the latest additions fully healthy as spring training begins, the team will have a chance to strike right away.

As Toney and Barkate will be at the top of the opponent’s scouting reports, that will create opportunities for Vaughn to capitalize. A unique aspect of his game is having quarterback experience coming out of high school. After moving to wide receiver, the knowledge behind the position gives him the advantage to read defenses and sneak through defenses.

Vaughn will develop directly under coach Kevin Beard, who’s entering his fourth season with the program.

The revamped wide receiver core will allow offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to carve out explosive plays, which wasn’t always a reliable option last season.

Vaughn’s production will likely increase on the Hurricanes, along with an opportunity to actually compete for something greater, such as a National Championship.
