After a career-best season in Coral Gables, the power-hitting Viera native heads to the Athletics organization, bringing a formidable .338 batting average and elite offensive upside.
MIAMI, Fla. – Early in the MLB’s sixth round, the Sacramento (soon-to-be Las Vegas) Athletics selected Miami Hurricanes catcher Alex Sosa with the No. 172 pick. After spending two years at North Carolina State, the local Viera native returned to the Sunshine State and carved out a remarkable season.
Sosa batted .338 with a 1.119 OPS, including 75 hits in 222 at-bats, 16 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 71 runs batted in, and 149 total bases in 59 games – all new career highs. He was the Hurricanes’ primary catcher for a majority of the season before moving to first base.
As a freshman and part of the Wolfpack program, Sosa delivered an immediate impact. When the lights shined brighter, so did the way he played. Sosa started in all eight 2024 NCAA Tournament games and reached the College World Series. He batted .273 with a .762 OPS, including nine hits in 33 at-bats, a double, and a home run.
Despite missing significant time with an illness, Sosa was among the nation’s best freshmen. The following season, he was a full-time starter. In 52 games, Sosa batted .291 with a .935 OPS, including 55 hits in 189 at-bats, 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 40 runs batted in, and 101 total bases.
Behind the plate, the 21-year-old needs to improve on being a threat for base-runners looking to steal. Last season, Sosa caught just seven in 30 total attempts. He’s improved at blocking and framing upon arriving at the Coral Gables campus, resulting in an elevated draft stock.
Sosa earned a 45 overall scouting grade:
- Hit: 45 (below average)
- Power: 55 (average)
- Run: 40 (below average)
- Arm: 45 (below average)
- Field: 45 (below average)
Despite the grading, Sosa has the upside to be an everyday catcher, at least a high-quality backup.
The Athletics’ farm system currently ranks No. 18 in the league, featuring two – shortstop Leo De Vries (No. 2) and left-handed pitcher Jaime Arnold (No. 25) – top 100 prospects.
Sosa has the opportunity to return to college with an extra year of NCAA eligibility available. The deadline for draftees to sign is Monday, July 27. Sosa would benefit by playing another collegiate season and potentially going higher in the 2027 MLB Draft.
However, a call to the next level right now could result in the end of a short hometown reunion.
Sosa grew up a Hurricanes fan and got to wear the uniform at least for the one time.
