The Miami Hurricanes' pursuit of QB Davin Davidson signals a shift, aiming for long-term stability beyond the transfer portal's quick fixes.
The Miami Hurricanes have been fortunate enough to rely on a top-market quarterback over the last couple of seasons in Cam Ward and Carson Beck, looking to continue the trend in All-ACC Darian Mensah. However, each situation has been one-and-done, and will likely be the scenario with the 21-year-old. The program is seeking stability, not only by developing the young players already on the roster, but by adding more talent.
Quarterback Davin Davidson is a strong option to add to the recruiting class of 2027. He’s a four-star who currently attends Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, a private institution located in Sarasota, Florida. Davidson completed 147 of 234 passes, 62.8 percent, throwing for 2,497 yards and 24 touchdowns in 23 total games over two seasons. Also, he’s shown mobility, rushing 28 times for 105 yards, scoring three touchdowns.
It was reported on Thursday that the Hurricanes, along with others, are emerging as contenders in Davidson’s recruitment. He’s listed at 6-6, 215 pounds, and ranked 132nd nationally, 12th among quarterbacks, and 13th in the state of Florida for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings.
The four-star prospect received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Northwestern Wildcats, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, North Carolina State Wolfpack, and Virginia Tech Hokies, along with many others.
Davidson made several unofficial visits, including with the Hurricanes on June 8, 2025. He recently attended a spring training session with the Auburn Tigers on Thursday, March 19.
Coming off a National Championship, the program seeks to remain competitive in the long run. However, to achieve that, it takes recruiting and developing high school talent. They’ve found success with a few homegrown stars, such as edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., running back Mark Fletcher, and, most recently, with wide receiver Malachi Toney.
However, it hasn’t translated at the quarterback position. The program still has a couple of promising and developing players on the roster, such as Luke Nickel and Dereon Coleman. If either of them can emerge past next season, it could end the transfer portal cycle.
The Hurricanes have been named finalists for several prospects, but potentially landing a young quarterback such as Davidson could change the strategy of constructing a roster. The transfer portal is a unique resource, but retaining established players can make life easier.
Davidson’s decision is approaching, which means less time for each program to make a final case.
