After battling through injuries, the homegrown cornerback is ready to silence doubters and anchor the Miami Hurricanes' secondary by showcasing incredible potential in a breakout junior campaign.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes’ success from last season primarily came from the defensive side of the field. Along with having arguably the best edge rushing duo in Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr., the secondary was among the best in the nation, involving key pieces such as cornerback Keionte Scott and safety Jakobe Thomas.
Despite key departures to the 2026 NFL Draft, the unit’s production is expected to translate over to next season as some players step into expanded roles, such as cornerback Damari Brown. After deciding to return for a senior year, the homegrown prospect believes there are still better days of football ahead.
“I feel like I haven’t reached my peak yet,” he said in an interview with Ibis Media. “It’s coming and I haven’t showed the world everything I can do. I’ve been showing splatters, but a whole season injury-free, it’ll get scary this year.”
Brown appeared in 13 games last season, including five starts, logging 24 total tackles, 16 solos and eight assists, a pass broken up, and a pass defended. He missed the entire College Football Playoff run due to a foot injury. Despite hinting at a potential return for the National Championship game, Brown wasn’t cleared and remained on the sidelines.
It wasn’t the first time the Fort Lauderal native battled through injuries. In the 2024 season opener against the Florida Gators, Brown went down after logging two solo tackles. He would miss the next 10 games before returning to limited action against the Syracuse Orange in late November.
Brown was a four-star recruit coming from American Heritage Schools, a private institution located in Broward County. He recorded 67 total tackles, 37 solos and 30 assists, five tackles for loss, a sack, 15 passes defended, and four interceptions, including a pick-six, in 23 games as a freshman to a senior. Brown committed to the University of Miami over the Gators, Florida State Seminoles, South Florida Bulls, Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, LSU Tigers, Oregon Ducks, Ole Miss Rebels, and Oklahoma Sooners, along with several other programs.
The redshirt junior is the son of former Hurricanes defensive back Selwyn Brown. He was a key secondary player in three seasons, including in 1987, when the program won its second National Championship in its history.
Brown will very likely stick in the Hurricanes’ rotation, but availability will be the best ability. Whether as a starter or reserve, he is looking to showcase everything on the field.
