Corey Hetherman’s aggressive new scheme has transformed the Miami Hurricanes into a defensive powerhouse, landing three violent playmakers on the national radar as they transition into elite leadership roles.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes went from having one of the worst scoring defenses in the nation to the fifth-best in the Football Bowl Subdivision this past season. Corey Heterman proved to deliver an immediate impact as a first-year defensive coordinator with the program. Despite several departures from the unit to the 2026 NFL Draft, including edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr., the production is expected to carry over into the new season.
The Hurricanes have several returning players looking to take over in expanded roles, plus a couple of new additions. Hetherman has installed a new identity for the defense by playing with intensity, resilience, and violence. The style has landed three players from the roster into CBS Sports’ top-26 most feared players list.
At the very end was sophomore safety Bryce Fitzgerald. Similar to Hetherman, the Miami native was an immediate factor in the Hurricanes’ secondary last season as a freshman. He logged 16 total tackles, 10 solos and six assists, a tackle for loss, a sack, two passes broken up, eight passes defended, and led the Atlantic Coast Conference with six interceptions, appearing in all 16 games, including four starts.
“Fitzgerald quickly processes everything happening in front of him,” Brad Crawford wrote. “Despite Miami's depth in the secondary, Fitzgerald is the clear quarterback of the defense at the back end for coordinator Corey Hetherman.”
The 18-year-old is looking to take on a leadership role while remaining productive on the field.
In the middle of the list, No. 19, was redshirt senior defensive tackle Ahmad Moten Sr. He finished with career highs across the board last season, playing a critical role in the Hurricanes’ upfront. The Fort Lauderdale native logged 31 total tackles, 20 solos and 11 assists, nine tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks, appearing in 14 games, all starts.
Despite being draft eligible, potentially a late-round selection, Moten Sr. decided to return to the Hurricanes for a final ride. He did not participate in spring practices due to suffering an ankle injury in the College Football Playoffs. However, the expectation is for him to be cleared for fall camp.
“A near-unanimous choice to be a Day 1 selection in early 2027 mock drafts,” Crawford wrote. “Moten's primary strength is his brute strength and initial club against guards and centers trying to disrupt his forward momentum.”
Moten Sr. is expected to take on a leadership role, especially with Mesidor and Bain Jr. gone, and show out first-round potential.
Finally, the highest Hurricanes defender on the list, No. 6, was senior edge rusher Damon Wilson II. As Mesidor and Bain Jr. embark on new NFL beginnings, the 21-year-old is looking to take over. He was added to the roster through the transfer portal, previously with the Missouri Tigers, logging 23 total tackles, nine solos and 14 assists, 9.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and a three-yard interception against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Wilson II earned Second Team All-SEC honors.
The new Hurricanes edge rusher looks to develop under defensive line coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, taking the next steps ahead of the 2027 NFL Draft.
“Miami secured a rare luxury: a high-floor, high-ceiling pass rusher who fits a playoff-ready roster rather than a rebuilding project in the trenches,” Crawford wrote.
Other names could've been mentioned, such as junior safety Omar Thornton and junior edge rusher Marquise Lightfoot. Regardless, the Hurricanes’ defense is looking to repeat as one of the nation’s best, along with a couple of future NFL talents.
