Elite defensive back Donte Wright shuns the Bulldogs for South Florida, catapulting the Miami Hurricanes’ 2027 recruiting class into the national top five following a historic championship run.

Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes’ 2027 recruiting class continues to progress in the right direction. They secured a commitment from four-star defensive lineman Ezekiel Ayangbile from Houston, Texas. Afterwards, the program nailed a Hail Mary after flipping former Georgia Bulldogs commit Donte Wright. He’s a five-star defensive back from Long Beach, California.

Wright currently attends Long Beach Polytechnic High School, a public institution located in Los Angeles County. In three seasons, he has logged 68 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 14 passes broken up, three sacks, and two interceptions as a freshman to junior. The five-star prospect originally committed to the Bulldogs program on June 30, 2025. He would then make an unofficial visit in the months following up during the Fall semester.

However, Wright’s recruitment process has completely changed its trajectory after flipping on Saturday. He made an unofficial visit with the Coral Gables program on March 28, shortly before spring practices began.

Wright is the second five-star prospect from the Hurricanes’ 2027 class, according to On3, alongside wide receiver Nick Lennear. The latest addition boosts the program’s national ranking to fifth and a 93.13 class score.

The California native is ranked eighth nationally, second among cornerbacks, and the best in California for the 2027 class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He received interest and scholarship offers from numerous programs, including the Oregon Ducks, UCLA Bruins, USC Trojans, California Golden Bears, Washington Huskies, Ole Miss Rebels, Tennessee Volunteers, and Utah Utes, plus others. Despite having opportunities to play close to home, Wright appears ready for a new chapter of football in a new setting.

The five-star recruit joins a program coming off a National Championship appearance, which saw a scoring defense completely flip to becoming the fifth-best in the Football Bowl Subdivision after finishing No. 70 the previous year. The team had several key contributors, including veteran cornerback Keionte Scott, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Hurricanes reportedly hired Terry Jefferson as the new cornerbacks coach on Wednesday, May 6. He will soon get to work directly with one of the highly-touted prospects of the 2027 class.

Wright had future official visits scheduled with several programs, includingthe Bulldogs, but they have all been cancelled, according to Sports247.

Regardless, the Hurricanes are building towards a promising future, with plenty of work to be done on the high school recruiting trail.
