After dominating the ACC with a 10-win season, Rob Evans must now choose between joining San Diego’s farm system or returning to Coral Gables for a final run.
MIAMI, Fla. – Despite the Miami Hurricanes’ pitching inconsistencies this past season, lefty ace Rob Evans stood out with dominance on the mound. He started 15 games – 87.2 innings pitched – and finished with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Evans became the first University of Miami pitcher to record at least 10 wins in a single season since Michael Mediavilla in 2016.
The 22-year-old was among the Atlantic Coast Conference’s best and most prolific pitchers. Coming off a remarkable season, Evans would be selected by the San Diego Padres with the No. 365 pick (round 12) in the 2026 MLB Draft.
The Hurricanes star pitcher struck out 98 batters – tied for the fifth-most in the ACC. He limited opponents to a .210 batting average. Evans earned All-ACC Second Team, ABCA/Rawlings Southeast All-Region Second Team and NCBWA Third Team All-America honors.
Before a breakout season, the New York native was a member of the Hurricanes bullpen upon arriving in 2025. In 17 appearances – 15.1 innings pitched – Evans finished with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. He played in two out of three Super Regional matchups against the Louisville Cardinals.
Evans confirmed with MiamiRoundtable that an opportunity to return for a fifth collegiate season is presented. As a freshman, he played junior college baseball at Chipola College. Evans would transfer to Georgia State before joining the Coral Gables program. Despite battling personal adversity throughout the 2025 season, he would see the light at the other end of the tunnel.
The Padres have the worst-ranked farm system, given the number of young talents used in trade packages. Catcher Ethan Salas is the lone top-100 prospect still with the franchise.
Evans will have until Monday, July 27, to decide whether to pursue a career in professional baseball or return to college for another season. If he chooses not to wear “The U” uniform again, the veteran pitcher would have ended a memorable chapter on a high note. If Evans returns, a starting role is likely guaranteed on the Hurricanes’ revamped pitching staff.
There’s no signing bonus included with being a 12th-round selection. Meanwhile, Evans will likely have a favorable NIL deal awaiting him to return to the Coral Gables campus. The Hurricanes’ chances of competing for a College World Series title would increase with the lefty ace back on the pitching staff.
It’s a big moment for Evans, but a critical business decision is pending.
