After a historic National Championship run and a miraculous program turnaround, the Miami alum silences critics by silencing powerhouses and establishing a new era of dominance.
MIAMI, Fla. – Before last season unraveled, Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal was nearly in the hot seat. In the process of rebuilding the program, a late collapse against the Syracuse Orange in 2024 ended all ACC title and College Football Playoff hopes. Although Cristobal is known to establish winning cultures – notably for winning back-to-back Pac-12 titles with the Oregon Ducks – questions emerged about whether he could lead the Hurricanes over the hump.
After facing similar adversity last season, suffering disappointing losses to the Louisville Cardinals and SMU Mustangs, the University of Miami alum led the team to a dominant four-game winning streak. The Hurricanes won each matchup – against Syracuse, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, and Pitt – by an average of 27.5 points. The late-season stretch, plus having the head-to-head over Notre Dame, proved to be enough for the Selection Committee to allow the program an invitation to its first College Football Playoff appearance.
Despite being underdogs against Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Ole Miss, the Hurricanes overcame each opponent to reach the National Championship game for the first time since 2003. The historic run proved Cristobal belonged among the best head coaches in college football.
According to On3, the 55-year-old is ranked the best head coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Coach Cristobal established a new identity within the program – revolving around resiliency and physicality. Regardless of roster changes, maintaining a reliable offensive line remains a top priority. As a former offensive tackle on two of the Hurricanes’ National Championship-winning teams – 1989 and 1991 – coach Cristobal understands what happens when you dominate the line of scrimmage.
Even at previous stops, the Miami native never lost touch with the football program. He watched the Hurricanes fall back from the rich history, especially after a 2011 scandal involving a former booster.
When the opportunity for Cristobal to return home arrived, although the decision wasn’t so easy, it ended up being too good to pass up. After three years of scrapping, rebuilding, and disappointing moments, the Hurricanes have returned as college football’s best.
Ahead of the upcoming season, the program is viewed as National Championship favorites. Coach Cristobal and the staff successfully revamped the roster with enough talent to carve out another deep College Football Playoff run.
Within the new journey, the Hurricanes are looking to claim the first ACC title in program history.
It’s safe to say that coach Cristobal isn't leaving Coral Gables anywhere anytime soon.
