Safety Conrad Hussey’s homecoming ends abruptly as the former four-star recruit exits Coral Gables, leaving the Miami Hurricanes' revamped defense to navigate through a championship pursuit without him.
MIAMI, Fla. – In the Miami Hurricanes’ quest to return to the National Championship game, 13 new players arrived through the transfer portal, highlighted by All-Atlantic Coast Conference quarterback Darian Mensah. Coach Mario Cristobal and the staff completely revamped the roster, filling every void needed to be addressed.
Among the new faces at Coral Gables was senior safety Conrad Hussey. After previous stops at Florida State and Oregon State, the local Sunrise native returned home to the Sunshine State. However, the reunion didn’t last long, as Miami Herald Sports Columnist Barry Jackson reported on Thursday that Hussey was no longer on the Hurricanes’ roster – reasons were unclear.
The program decided to move on from the 21-year-old defensive back.
Hussey participated in spring practice, including the exhibition game in front of fans at Cobb Stadium. It was unlikely that he’d crack the rotation, given the Hurricanes’ loaded safety room with Bryce Fitzgerald, Zecharaiah Poyser, J.J. Dunnigan, Dylan Day, and Isaiah Taylor.
In three collegiate seasons with the Seminoles and Beavers, Hussey stacked 45 total tackles, 28 solos and 17 assists, 0.5 tackles for loss, two passes defended, two forced fumbles, and a two-yard interception against the Pitt Panthers. He was a four-star recruit coming from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Hussey received scholarship offers from the Florida Gators and Hurricanes, among several others, but chose to move to the state’s capital in Tallahassee.
However, this isn’t the first time a program released the former top-20 safety recruit.
In August of 2025, ahead of the college football season, Hussey was dismissed by the Seminoles for allegedly getting into a “physical altercation” with a position coach during practice. He found a new opportunity on the West Coast with Oregon State, but only appeared in three games.
The University of Miami or Hussey has yet to release a statement on the situation. Despite the odds, the senior safety could look to find a new team. Hussey could take the Xavier Lucas route and unenroll, then enroll at another institution.
The NCAA would not be able to prevent it.
Regardless of what might’ve happened behind the scenes, the Hurricanes have a top priority established: win the National Championship. Despite not playing a clean game, they were one clean pass away from potentially making history.
The newly constructed roster is looking to right a wrong.
It’s a new chapter for “The U,” one that involves competitiveness and legitimate title aspirations — which hasn’t been seen over the last two decades. There are still a couple of months ahead of fall camp.
