Fresh off a thrilling rivalry win, Mario Cristobal’s elite recruiting machine eyes a massive 2028 haul as top-ranked in-state stars Brysen Wright and Asher Ghioto trend toward Coral Gables.

MIAMI, Fla. – The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes won over the Florida State Seminoles in a 43-35 outing in double overtime, as several five-star recruits were in attendance to witness the historic in-state rivalry clash at Hard Rock Stadium.

Although the weather delivered a challenge with gloomy rain, it didn’t delay what would be a back-and-forth showdown. The Hurricanes finished with a win and reportedly left a strong impression on the recruits. Among the invites were five-stars Brysen Wright (wide receiver) and Asher Ghioto (edge rusher). Both are Jacksonville (Fla.) natives and part of the 2028 high school graduating class.

The Hurricanes are projected to secure pledges from both in-state talents, according to Rivals’ recruiting prediction machine. As the Coral Gables program currently has just two commits for 2028, four-star offensive lineman Kweli Fielder and three-star quarterback Knox Annis, landing both Ghioto and Wright would be significant for the future. Head coach Mario Cristobal is among the nation’s best recruiters and winning makes the job easier.

Wright is teammates with Annis at Mandarin High School, a public institution located in Duval County (Fla.). This season, he’s caught 32 passes for 730 yards and scored eight touchdowns, according to MaxPreps. Wright is ranked the third-best player in the nation among the recruiting class, first for both wide receivers and from Florida. According to 247’s Zach Blostein, he could be looking to reclassify for the 2027 high school graduating class, same as five-star athlete A’mir Sears.

Between this season and last year, the Hurricanes have seen remarkable production from the defensive ends. Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. were both dominant forces together and wound up being first-round picks in this year’s NFL Draft. The Hurricanes currently have Marquise Lightfoot, Armondo Blount, Damon Wilson II, and Herbert Scroggins III, among others, setting the edges.

Ghioto has an opportunity to join the successful development with Pro Football Hall of Famer and defensive line coach Jason Taylor. He currently attends The Bolles School, a private institution located in Jacksonville (Fla.). Ghioto has 46 total tackles logged, 33 solos and 13 assists, 20 tackles for loss, and eight sacks through seven games this season thus far. He is ranked fifth nationally, the best edge rusher, and second in the state of Florida.

The Hurricanes’ 2027 recruiting class is among the nation’s best and 2028 could be early to take the same trajectory. There's less than two months before December's early NCAA signing period.
