After a miraculous title run and aggressive roster overhaul, Mario Cristobal has the Miami Hurricanes poised to end a life-long conference championship drought and reclaim national dominance.
MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Miami’s football program has one of the richest histories in college sports. From the early 1980s to the 2000s, the Hurricanes won five National Championships, including the 2001 season–when the team had 17 NFL first-round selections. Although not forgotten, the success of hardwood and football royalty became a distant memory.
The Hurricanes’ football legacy shifted after officially joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004, moving from the Big East. Before Mario Cristobal took over at the helm in 2021, the program only had one double-digit win season in 18 years.
What once appeared to be one of college football’s biggest powerhouses was suddenly fading away from success.
Three years after Cristobal took the head-coaching job, the Hurricanes’ image drastically changed–reaching the National Championship game for the first time since 2003. Despite a difficult 27-21 defeat to the Indiana Hoosiers, the moment proved to be a significant turnaround, taking the program–not just back to its glory days–but forward.
After revamping the roster with 13 transfer portal acquisitions, including a recruiting class that featured five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, the Hurricanes are looking to be among the nation’s best teams for the upcoming college football season. According to On3, they’re the best in the ACC’s power rankings.
Despite all the past success, the Hurricanes haven’t won a football conference title since leaving the Big East. They’ve only reached the ACC Championship game once in 2017, but suffered a 38-3 loss to the Clemson Tigers. The Hurricanes fell short the last couple of years, but the upcoming season must be the one to end the long-time drought.
Coach Cristobal has arguably the best roster in the conference.
Although Carson Beck left, quarterback Darian Mensah is looking to pick things back up. The wide receiver core improved around rising star Malachi Toney, with the additions of Vandrevius Jacobs, Cam Vaughn, and Cooper Barkate. The Hurricanes retained the entire running backs room, including Jordan Lyle, Girard Pringle Jr., CharMar Brown, and local star Mark Fletcher Jr.
Despite questions surrounding the offensive line, losing four key starters to the 2026 NFL Draft, coach Alex Mirabal isn’t worried about filling the voids. The Hurricanes still have veterans, such as Samson Okunlola, Ryan Rodriguez, and Matthew McCoy. Plus, having promising freshman like Cantwell could make things easier.
The Hurricanes must win the ACC title, which is where Barkate and Mensah come into play, having won it last year with the Duke Blue Devils. Claiming it would provide an automatic bid for the College Football Playoffs, potentially a first-round bye. Despite reaching the National Championship through a difficult path, the Hurricanes might not get away with it again without winning the ACC title.
