Hollywood's Sherrod Gourdine adds versatility to the Miami Hurricanes' 2027 class, showcasing dual-threat capabilities and a promising future close to home.
As the Miami Hurricanes wrap up the first day of spring training, preparing for a new season, it was reported on Tuesday that Sherrod Gourdine committed to the program. He’s a three-star athlete who currently attends McArthur High School, a public institution located in Hollywood, Florida. As a junior, the highly-recruited prospect recorded snaps on both sides of the field.
When playing at cornerback, Gourdine recorded 10 total tackles, nine solos and an assist, plus a tackle for loss in 10 games. He had limited opportunities to show off his quarterback skills, but completed three of three passes for 24 yards.
The three-star recruit is ranked 529th nationally, 36th among athletes, and 47th in the state of Florida for the class of 2027, according to 247Sports Composite. He received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, South Florida Bulls, Boston College Eagles, Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Louisville Cardinals, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Ole Miss Rebels, Texas A&M Aggies, and SMU Mustangs, along with several others.
Gourdine was primarily recruited by defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. The Hurricanes were the second program to present him with a scholarship offer. He commits on the same day as three-star defensive lineman Josh Johnson.
The recruiting class of 2027 consists of all in-house Florida prospects, including four-star Nick Lennear, four-star Ah’Mari Stevens, four-star safety Jaylyn Jones, four-star tight end Demarcus Deroche, and three-star offensive tackle Zaquan Linton.
Coming off a National Championship, the Hurricanes’ goal isn’t just to stay competitive, but to secure and develop talent that is close to home.
The image of the program has completely changed, which is attracting the attention of several high school recruits. The turnaround started as coach Mario Cristobal was hired and found a few in-house prospects, such as edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, and running back Mark Fletcher Jr., who stuck with the Hurricanes through thick and thin and believed in the vision.
The staff is currently without a defensive backs coach after Zac Etheridge left after one season, accepting a job with the Arizona Cardinals. On Tuesday, coach Cristobal told the media that defense analyst Terry Jefferson is a candidate for the position.
The Hurricanes are continuing to build towards a brighter future, especially as the recruiting class of 2027 is in the early stages of its construction.
Gourdine’s talents stay close to home with an opportunity to take his development further.
