The Miami Hurricanes are bringing in a tremendous amount of new talent from the transfer portal, including All-ACC quarterback Darian Mensah. However, there were a couple of gaps remaining on the roster, such as a blocking tight end. Last season, they split snaps between Elija Lofton and Alex Bauman, both utilized mainly as route runners.
Even four-star tight end signee Gavin Mueller wasn't known for blocking throughout his high school playing career. Instead, it was reported on Wednesday, Feb. 18, by CanesInSight that edge rusher Cole McConathy II will switch to the position.
The former three-star recruit has played in 10 total games with the Hurricanes throughout two seasons, recording just a solo tackle.
McConathy II could've carved out a role as an edge rusher with stars Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor declaring for the upcoming NFL draft and receiving invitations to the Combine. However, Marquise Lightfoot and Hayden Lowe are likely to take on bigger roles, plus the addition of Second-Team All-SEC Damon Wilson II.
The Alabama native's experience as an edge rusher should be useful in the shift of positions. He'll be familiar with the level of physicality, plus has the size, listed at 6-5, 250 pounds.
The Hurricanes' tight end room is very inexperienced outside of Lofton. They retained most of them for next season, except for former four-star recruit Brock Schott, who transferred to the Indiana Hoosiers during the College Football Playoffs. None of the inexperienced tight ends recorded a catch from last season.
McConathy II's progression in adjusting to the position will be critical for the team's depth.
Cody Woodiel, former tight ends coach, departed during the offseason to join the Ole Miss Rebels, earning the same job title, plus co-offensive coordinator. The Hurricanes currently have three vacancies on the staff, including running backs coach and defensive backs coach.
Coach Mario Cristobal is known to be strategic when picking his staff. The next tight ends coach could provide a strong boost in McConathy II's development. He has no past experience playing as a tight end, which could be a concern. However, there are still months before the new season begins, which means he will have time to adjust and learn all the techniques necessary.
The Hurricanes have an explosive wide receiver core for next season, including star Malachi Toney, but tight ends still get plenty of touches in offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson's offense. McConathy II's ability to run routes and make catches will be another important aspect in his new development.
It will be an interesting situation to observe as it develops, especially when Spring Training opens.
