Following Malachi Toney’s historic breakout, a new wave of overlooked recruits prepares to storm the field. Meet the explosive playmakers ready to ignite the Miami Hurricanes' 2026 title hunt.
MIAMI, Fla. – In all sports, rookies manage to surprise the league by delivering an immediate impact. Last college football season, wide receiver Malachi Toney joined the Miami Hurricanes as a reclassified 17-year-old freshman and former three-star recruit. After graduating from American Heritage High School, the local Liberty City native would soon become one of the biggest names in the sport.
Playing in all 16 games, Toney led the nation with 109 catches for 1,211 yards and scored 13 total touchdowns – receiving, rushing, and passing. The Hurricanes presented him an opportunity, took it, and never looked back. It shows that impact goes beyond being an underclassman or an upperclassman.
A new group of freshmen joins the roster and here are a few under-the-radar names that could emerge throughout the 2026 college football season – outside of the obvious, such as Jackson Cantwell and Gavin Mueller:
Starting with edge rusher Asharri Charles from Venice High School. The departures of Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. – both first-round selections – present opportunities for others to shine.
Although the Hurricanes have several veterans to rely upon – Armondo Blount, Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II, Hayden Lowe, and Nebraska transfer Keona Davis – Charles could work towards a rotational role. He was ranked a top-80 prospect in the 2026 class, including top-10 among both edge rushers and from Florida. As a senior, Charles logged 129 total tackles, 82 solos and 47 assists, 28 tackles for loss, and 13.5 sacks in 13 games.
The incoming freshman is listed at 6-2 and 230 pounds, with the possession of speed and power to challenge offensive tackles. Given the right opportunity, Charles could emerge as the Hurricanes’ next long-term edge rushing star.
Another player from Charles’ class who could deliver an immediate impact is Vance Spafford. He’s a wide receiver and Mission Viejo graduate – a public institution from California. In four seasons, Spafford caught 191 passes for 3,414 yards and scored 48 touchdowns in 41 games.
The former four-star recruit is known as a fast receiver who can create space but finish plays through contact. Despite missing significant time as a high-school senior, Spafford participated in spring practices and the exhibition game at Cobb Stadium. He’s joining a veteran-heavy wide receiver room, but the incoming freshman could show out on special teams as a returner.
Spafford primarily plays in the slot; while Toney and Daylyn Upshaw are ahead, the Hurricanes could utilize him to throw opponents off with different looks and personnel.
The final freshman that could deliver an immediate impact is cornerback Camdin Portis – son of former Hurricanes running back and National Champion Clinton Portis. As a senior at North Carolina’s Myers Park High School, he logged 59 total tackles, 30 solos and 29 assists, a tackle for loss, two sacks, and three interceptions in 12 games.
Portis primarily stood as a slot defender, but could’ve been an honorary member of the defensive line, given the hard-nose tackling he provided on the field.
Although the Hurricanes’ secondary is mostly the same as last season – minus cornerback Keionte Scott and safety Jakobe Thomas to the NFL – injuries impacted the depth chart in the College Football Playoffs. Portis will likely start on special teams, but playing meaningful snaps shouldn’t be ruled out.
Each freshman will have an opportunity to climb the depth chart as fall camp approaches.
