Hall of Fame icon Michael Irvin shatters expectations, crowning the Miami Hurricanes' sophomore sensation a generational talent following record-breaking performances that have the college football world buzzing.
MIAMI, Fla. – There is arguably no more passionate Miami Hurricanes alumnus than former star wide receiver, National Champion, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, who claims rising star and sophomore Malachi Toney is the best wide receiver he’s ever seen.
“His timing is so perfect," he said on his YouTube channel. "Everything he does, his timing so perfect and his patience is so over the top. This is the greatest receiver I've ever laid my eyes on."
Toney started his sophomore campaign on a strong Heisman Trophy-buzzing note. He caught 12 passes for 234 yards (the most by any receiver in a single game in program history) and scored three touchdowns. There was some indication, including from MiamiRoundtable, that Toney’s targets would go down, given the Hurricanes’ playmaking depth. He caught quarterback Darian Menash’s first pass and finished with a game-high 13 targets.
After growing up in Liberty City (Fla.), emerging as a three-star recruit at American Heritage High School, and stepping on the Coral Gables campus as a 17-year-old reclassified freshman, Toney took the college football world by storm. He led the nation with 109 catches for 1,211 yards and scored 13 total touchdowns – receiving (10), rushing (one), passing (two).
Toney solidified himself as one of the most prolific and versatile playmakers in college football.
Irvin has been around talent at both the collegiate and professional levels. He played alongside quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde, cornerback and return specialist Deion Sanders, running back Emmitt Smith, and other Hall of Famers. If Irving is making a bold claim, fans and media should listen.
The 60-year-old has been around football long enough to scout talent.
Toney is already regarded as one of the best players in college football. He’s added muscle this summer, a solid route runner, and a willing blocker to create space for his teammates. Toney has an opportunity to solidify himself as a projected first-rounder in the 2028 NFL Draft.
As the 18-year-old’s production continues to explode, the better chance the Hurricanes have of being successful. He was able to learn behind veterans CJ Daniels and Keelan Marion last season as a freshman, but he’s one of the team’s biggest leaders as a sophomore.
The Hurricanes are coming off a 45-6 win over Stanford on Friday and are preparing to face the Florida A&M Rattlers in their home opener at Hard Rock Stadium. As the season progresses, Toney’s production and winning impact will have the national media’s attention. He will have opportunities to prove Irvin’s claim correct.
Although Toney is an unselfish player, more focused on the team rather than himself, the electrifying star could be a very special talent in the foreseeable future.
