Following a suspension and legal hurdles, Jordan Lyle returns to a depleted backfield, seeking redemption as the Miami Hurricanes looks to fill the CharMar “Marty” Brown void.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After not playing in the first three games of the 2026 college football season and serving a team suspension, junior running back Jordan Lyle is back with the Miami Hurricanes at full capacity.
The 21-year-old had been dealing with a legal case involving alleged fleeing from police. Lyle’s return couldn’t have come at a better time, as head coach Mario Cristobal announced that redshirt junior running back CharMar “Marty” Brown is out for the rest of the season with a right knee injury. However, the circumstances don’t guarantee Lyle immediate playing time.
As the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) native returns to in-season form, the trust between a player and a coach is important. In Monday’s media availability, Cristobal emphasized that Lyle is back and ready to move forward.
“Jordan has made a poor decision,” he said. “He has done and is doing the things necessary to put himself in a good place with his teammates and our program. He is a trusted football player and person who is working hard to make sure that he has the full trust of everybody.”
Ahead of Saturday’s game against Central Michigan at Hard Rock Stadium, freshman Javian Mallory and sophomore Girard Pringle Jr. are the main running backs with experience this season and are primarily healthy. The Hurricanes could lean on them, plus redshirt sophomores Jack Whitehouse and Chris Wheatley-Humphrey, while Lyle regains his rhythm on the field.
The running back room was arguably the program’s deepest position. However, as Brown is sidelined for the foreseeable future and Mark Fletcher Jr. could be limited with an upper-body injury, there’s an emphasis on everyone stepping up.
Lyle has shown great flashes of being impactful from the backfield.
In the 2024 season, as a freshman, the former four-star recruit rushed 54 times for 400 yards and scored four touchdowns in 12 games. Lyle averaged 7.4 yards a carry, including a 91-yard dash against South Florida.
A year later, ahead of the 2025 season, the returning sophomore was the starting running back in the Hurricanes’ season/home opener against Notre Dame. After the first drive, Lyle’s trajectory was derailed. He battled through injuries and only appeared in six games. Lyle rushed 35 times for 108 yards and scored a touchdown against Stanford.
Given the lack of availability and production, the Hurricanes relied on Fletcher Jr., Brown, and Pringle Jr. This season, Lyle was seeking redemption until the legal case caused another derailment. As the Hurricanes navigate through recent injuries, he could be called upon to absorb some snaps.
Lyle has dealt with personal adversity twice in the last couple of years. The opportunity he’s been waiting for could finally be on the horizon. Lyle is undoubtedly talented, but a reintroduction is in order.
