As the Miami Hurricanes were solidifying the 2026 roster, reports reveal aggressive NIL offers targeting Pitt's Mason Heintschel and Duke’s Darian Mensah during a chaotic transfer portal window.
MIAMI, Fla. – Following the National Championship game, the Miami Hurricanes knew that finding Carson Beck’s replacement would be critical for future contention. The program took shots at several quarterbacks, including Ty Simpson, Sam Leavitt, and Brandon Sorsby.
Instead, Darian Mensah arrived, looking to deliver on title hopes. The situation couldn’t have gone better for the Hurricanes ahead of the 2026 season. However, recent news has come to light that another ACC quarterback was being lured to South Florida.
Originally reported in late June by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Christopher Carter, Pitt Panthers quarterback Mason Heintschel received a “big NIL contract” from the Hurricanes to join. In 10 games as a freshman, he completed 201 of 316 passes (63.6 percent) and threw for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns, including eight interceptions.
The situation occurred on Jan. 15, a day before the transfer portal window closed. Heintschel told Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi about the deal and managed to retain the star quarterback. In today’s world of college sports, players have all the power to explore the open market. However, Heintschel stayed loyal to the program that took a chance on him as a former three-star recruit.
When asked about the situation in Friday’s ACC Kickoff Media Day on Sirius XM, Narduzzi knew the Hurricanes’ quarterback search was far from over.
“We didn’t match that crazy offer, but we got pretty darn close,” he said. “I give our Chancellor Joan Gabel and Allen Greene credit for finding a way to keep Mason. We couldn’t lose him. Your quarterback is so critical. That’s a 15-day portal window – the 14th day that happens. The very next day, I’m in communications with [Duke coach] Manny Diaz that afternoon saying, ‘You better watch out. They’re coming for your [quarterback] too.’ It happened.”
Mensah entered the transfer portal right before the deadline. However, the Blue Devils program attempted to retain him through the court system, but instead a settlement was agreed upon by both parties before a judge was involved.
It marks a third consecutive year that the Hurricanes bring in a top-market quarterback. Mensah is following the same path as Beck and Cam Ward, but looking to bring back hardware to the Coral Gables campus.
College sports has its own business side. Players have the choice to be “free agents” and have no contractual obligation to the program that recruited them.
The Hurricanes plan to no longer explore the transfer portal for quarterback play, unless a unique opportunity presents itself.
