After a breakout 100-yard performance against Central Michigan, the explosive redshirt sophomore proves the Miami Hurricanes' backfield remains dangerous despite injuries.
MIAMI, Fla. – Entering the 2026 college football season, the No. 4 Miami Hurricanes’ running back room was arguably the deepest among the skilled positions, but redshirt sophomore Chris Wheatley-Humphrey revealed the depth’s talent on Saturday against Central Michigan.
The Dania Beach (Fla.) native rushed 11 times for 104 yards and scored his first collegiate career touchdown – all coming in the second half.
As redshirt junior CharMar “Marty” Brown is sidelined for the rest of the season with a severe right knee injury and senior star Mark Fletcher Jr. didn’t play on Saturday for precautionary reasons, it was up to Wheatley-Humphrey to step up, which was successful.
“I dedicate this game to them,” he told the media postgame, following a 52-3 win.
In Wheatley-Humphrey’s first two years with the program, 39 total snaps were absorbed. Last season, as a redshirt freshman, he had three standout performances against Bethune-Cookman, Stanford, and North Carolina State. Wheatley-Humphrey rushed for a combine 105 yards on 21 carries.
Despite showing flashes, there were no guarantees for him to crack the rotation, as the Hurricanes retained last year’s running back room, including Jordan Lyle, plus inserting freshman Javian Mallory into the mix.
However, deciding to stay rather than fully go into the transfer portal might pay off for Wheatley-Humphrey and the Hurricanes’ backfield production. He’s listed at 6-0 and 200 pounds, and can run between the tackles or on the outside. There were a few snaps in which Wheatley-Humphrey waited for the gaps to form, then made quick decisions about which way to dash through.
The former three-star recruit showed the ability to absorb contact and forced four missed tackles.
As Fletcher Jr. appears set to return for next Saturday’s road game against Clemson, Wheatley-Humphrey showed that the Hurricanes can further spread the running back snaps. Along with Mallory’s emergence and sophomore Girard Pringle Jr. looking to take the next step, the workload and physical toll don’t fall directly on just the star.
Head coach Mario Cristobal established that playing time comes from the trust built behind the scenes at Greentree Practice Fields and the Carol Solfer Indoor Practice Facility. As Wheatley-Humphrey has more film on the season, it pushes him closer to carving out a consistent role in the Hurricanes’ run schemes.
Brown’s extended absence is a difficult loss, but an opportunity for others to step up. Wheatley-Humphrey alluded to seizing the moment on Saturday, which could further translate throughout the season.
