After dominating the ACC under duress, Darian Mensah joins a Miami Hurricanes program built on line-of-scrimmage dominance. Keeping the star quarterback clean could unlock a national title run.
MIAMI, Fla. – In the last two years of Division I football, Darian Mensah has had different experiences of offensive line protection. In 2024 at Tulane, he finished with the best completion percentage – 65.9 – in the American Conference. Mensah was sacked only 18 times in 14 games while throwing for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns, including 6 interceptions.

Afterwards, Mensah transferred to Duke and made a significant jump in production. He led the Atlantic Coast Conference by throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, including six interceptions, in 14 games. However, the quality of protection wasn’t as elite as it was at Tulane.
Mensah was sacked 28 times – the seventh-most allowed among ACC programs. Despite having to deal with pressure, he still managed to execute on the field. Mensah led the Blue Devils program to its first conference title since 1989.
Interestingly enough, good things happen when the All-ACC quarterback has high-quality protection. According to Pro Football Focus, Mensah threw for 28 touchdowns last season when kept clean – the best among college football’s returning talent for next season.
Following a career year, the 21-year-old transferred to the Miami Hurricanes, looking to deliver on National Championship hopes. Given the program’s philosophy of dominating the line of scrimmage, Mensah should have the best protection he’s experienced thus far.
Last season, the Hurricanes allowed just 20 sacks in 16 games and the unit ranked No. 16 in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Despite losing four starters to the NFL Draft, including All-American right tackle Francis Mauigoa, Mario Cristobal shouldn’t be doubted when building an offensive line.
The Coral Gables program will primarily rely on in-house talent to fill the voids. Matthew McCoy, Ryan Rodriguez, and Samson Okunlola provide a veteran presence, especially for projected starting left tackle and freshman Jackson Cantwell. The five-star recruit will be tasked with delivering an immediate impact.
If the new unit manages to protect Mensah, the new Hurricanes quarterback can operate an offense with tons of explosive talent, including rising star wide receiver Malachi Toney.
Statistically, when kept untouched, good things happen.
Regardless of a new orchestrator, the program’s main priority is winning the line of scrimmage matchups. The offensive line has the most questions ahead of the upcoming season, but the situation will continue to develop ahead of fall camp.
Mensah has taken severe leaps over the last couple of years, but this could be the most important season for him. There’s pressure when joining the National Champion runner-ups.
If the Hurricanes’ offensive line manages to keep Mensah’s jersey clean, a return to the big stage is within reach.
