The freshman’s explosive performance against FAMU cements a meaningful role in a loaded backfield, offering the Miami Hurricanes a dynamic weapon.
MIAMI, Fla. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its weekly honorees and Miami Hurricanes freshman running back Javian Mallory was named ACC Rookie of the Week.
In last Thursday’s home opener against Florida A&M, the 19-year-old led the game with 142 rushing yards on 10 attempts and scored two touchdowns, including the first of his collegiate career. According to Pro Football Focus, a sports analytics company, Mallory forced seven missed tackles and had 122 yards after contact.
Since starting the 2026 college football season, the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) native has played meaningful snaps. Mallory is gaining experience to solidify himself in the Hurricanes’ loaded running back rotation. As opportunities present themselves, he takes advantage of them.
Initially, Mallory’s pathway to playing time appeared difficult, given the returning veterans in the backfield. The Hurricanes don’t shy away from playing freshmen, but retaining elite talent like Mark Fletcher Jr., CharMar “Marty” Brown, Jordan Lyle, and Girard Pringle Jr. is a rare occurrence in today’s college football world. Despite the odds, Mallory is delivering an immediate impact.
The Hurricanes will continue to rely on the former three-star recruit as the regular season progresses. After a dominant 2-0 start (ACC 1-0), the challenge will keep rising. The Hurricanes were voted the preseason favorites to win the ACC, essentially returning to the College Football Playoffs.
Mallory, along with others from the 2026 recruiting class, was present for the team’s historic run to the National Championship game. As a member of scout teams, he made himself known early. Mallory is showcasing on the field what the coaching staff and players saw behind the scenes.
Even with a revamped wide receiver core, the Hurricanes still firmly believe in running the ball effectively. As the reconstructed offensive line progresses, the gaps open better for the backfield supporting cast to operate.
Mallory’s early production sets him up for greater success in the foreseeable future. It wouldn’t be surprising if he starts a few games throughout the regular season. Last season, as a freshman, Pringle Jr. started against North Carolina State. Freshman safety JJ Dunnigan started for the first time in his collegiate career as a starter.
The Hurricanes don’t just stick to certain lineups without any room for flexibility. Mallory’s emergence has been beneficial, especially in Lyle’s absence because of a legal case. The Hurricanes will prepare for another ACC matchup this week: Friday against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in North Carolina. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. E.T. and televised on ESPN.
