South Florida’s two-way phenom and Miami Hurricanes commit A'Mir Sears fast-tracks arrival to Coral Gables, aiming to dominate both sides of the field following reclassification.

MIAMI, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes five-star commit and two-way star athlete A'Mir Sears is reportedly planning to enroll early, which can be as early as the 2027 spring semester; registration opens on Dec. 1.

The news comes three months following the South Florida native's reclassification. Sears currently attends Christopher Columbus High School, which is approximately five miles from the Coral Gables campus. He plays both sides of the field as a wide receiver and defensive back.

Offensively, this season, Sears has caught 18 passes for 273 yards while scoring four touchdowns in seven games, according to MaxPreps. Defensively, he's logged nine tackles, six solos and three assists.

When the Columbus Explorers faced No. 1 Bishop Gorman on Aug. 29, Sears was a centerpiece of a 33-28 upset. He grabbed three interceptions and scored two touchdowns.

Sears is a remarkable local talent who decided to stay home rather than commit elsewhere. He had several Power Four scholarship offers, including from Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Oregon, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, among others. After reclassifying, Sears is ranked the 11th-highest recruit, the best among listed athletes and second from Florida, according to 247Sports Composite.

It appears likely that the incoming freshman phenom will continue to play on both sides of the field. Former Colorado Buffaloes' Travis Hunter was the last college football star to successfully pull off the stunt. In the 2024 season, he led the Big 12 with 96 and 15 touchdowns while logging 1,258 yards. On the other side of the field, Hunter had 36 total tackles, 25 solos and 11 assists, a tackle for loss, and four interceptions.

All of which came in 13 games played.

Sears isn't looking to be the next Hunter, but rather to create an identity for himself. He has seen the impact of a local star staying home to play collegiate football in Hurricanes star wide receiver Malachi Toney. Following a historic freshman campaign, the Liberty City (Fla.) native has emerged as an inspiration to the South Florida youth.

After the Hurricanes' 52-23 win over Pitt on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium, Toney was asked about the responsibilities of being viewed highly by the small locals and it's something that isn't taken lightly.

"It feels amazing," the 19-year-old said. "It teaches me to be a young adult. Knowing that I have to do right and make wise decisions because the influence I have on the youth is incredible."'

Sears attended the Hurricanes' 43-35 win over the Florida State Seminoles at Hard Rock Stadium on Oct. 17, joining several other five-star recruits, including wide receiver Brysen Wright and edge rusher Asher Ghioto, both of whom are part of the 2028 high school graduating class currently.

If the Coral Gables program successfully returns to the College Football Playoffs, the versatile playmaker could look to participate in practices, similar to last year's recruiting cycle.

As Sears puts together an academic plan, the Hurricanes remain ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press' latest Top 25 poll and prepare to face UNC this upcoming Saturday at Chapel Hill (NC).
