The final game of the regular season had all the makings of a classic. No. 13 Ohio State Buckeyes versus No. 15 Michigan State Spartans — two ranked teams battling not just for pride, but for valuable Big Ten Tournament positioning.
Instead, it was Ohio State’s relentless defense and scorching shooting that stole the show.
Despite Michigan State’s best efforts to claw back, a massive first-half deficit proved too much to overcome. The Buckeyes secured their eighth straight win over the Spartans, improving to 13-5 in conference play. Ohio State now awaits its final Big Ten Tournament seeding. Michigan State, meanwhile, drops to 11-7 in conference action and will enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed.
The stakes were clear from the start: a double bye in the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament was still within reach for both squads.
Coming into the game, Minnesota held the No. 4 seed at 12-5 in conference play with a road matchup at Illinois. If the Golden Gophers lost, the winner between Michigan State and Ohio State would slide into that coveted fourth spot.
Ohio State (12-5) entered as the five seed, with Michigan State (11-6) sitting sixth. Maryland (11-7) lurked just behind in seventh, ready to leapfrog the Spartans with a Michigan State loss.
When the Spartans fell, their fate was sealed.
Michigan State will now play Thursday, March 5, against the winner of the 10-seed versus 15-seed matchup — currently Washington Huskies (9-8 Big Ten) and Purdue Boilermakers (4-13 Big Ten).
But before turning the page to tournament play, it’s worth revisiting how this seeding-deciding showdown unraveled.
The game turned quickly — and painfully — for Spartan fans.
Michigan State struggled mightily to generate offense against Ohio State’s suffocating defense. The Spartans managed just nine points in the opening quarter, while the Buckeyes surged ahead with active hands, perfectly timed reach-ins, and steals that ignited their transition game. By the end of the first quarter, Ohio State had built a 14-point cushion.
The second quarter only intensified the storm.
More turnovers led to fast-break opportunities, and the Buckeyes simply could not miss. Ohio State opened the quarter on a 13-2 run, stretching its lead to 36-11 at one point. What was once a 14-point deficit ballooned to nearly 30.
As gritty as the Spartans tried to be — as much as they attempted to settle in and slow the tempo — the quarter slipped away much like the first. Yet, just before halftime, Michigan State showed signs of life. A 7-0 run to close the half trimmed the deficit to 23, sending the teams into the locker room with Ohio State ahead 49-26.
The numbers told the story.
The Buckeyes knocked down 11 three-pointers in the first half alone — a team that averages just 7.8 per game. They entered the second half needing only seven more threes to set a season high. Michigan State struggled to contest from beyond the arc, allowing open looks that Ohio State capitalized on time and again.
To their credit, the Spartans refused to fold.
Michigan State carried its late first-half momentum into the third quarter, extending its run to 14-2 and cutting the lead to 18. Suddenly, the energy shifted.
The Spartans began forcing turnovers of their own. An aggressive, all-or-nothing defensive approach resulted in three consecutive Buckeye possessions ending in giveaways. Michigan State finally started delivering some of the same defensive pressure that had buried them early.
The Spartans went on to win the third quarter, closing it on a 6-0 run and trimming the deficit to 62-48. For the final 3:30 of the quarter, Ohio State was held scoreless.
There was life.
But there was still a 14-point mountain to climb.
Any hopes of a dramatic comeback required near perfection in the fourth quarter. Instead, Ohio State calmly regained control.
While the game evened out statistically in the final frame, the Buckeyes maintained a comfortable margin — hovering around 18 to 20 points for most of the quarter. At one point, Michigan State had an opportunity to cut the deficit to 10 or 11 with just over seven minutes remaining. A travel, however, halted the momentum, and the Spartans never got closer.
Ohio State continued its barrage from deep, ultimately setting a program record with 18 made three-pointers. Every time Michigan State threatened to chip away, the Buckeyes answered with another dagger from beyond the arc.
The final horn sounded with Ohio State victorious, 87-68.
Michigan State’s regular season concludes with a tough home loss, but the focus now shifts to tournament play. The Spartans will look to regroup, reset, and use this setback as motivation heading into Thursday’s matchup in the Big Ten Tournament.
The road won’t be easy — but March rarely is.
And if the third quarter showed anything, it’s that this Spartan team still has fight left in it.
