When you've played two games and you have two wins, you're happy. That's the situation Michigan State finds itself in after a dramatic double overtime win against Boston College. The Spartans and Eagles battled all game long but at the end of the night, it was Sparty on top, 42-40.
After losing to Boston College in Chestnut Hill last year, the Spartans were looking forward to this one for a long time. It was worth the wait as MSU is now 2-0. Here are three things that led to Michigan State's statement win.
Junior quarterback Aidan Chiles has been a bit up and down over the course of his career, but tonight at home against Boston College, it sure was a lot of up. The 6-3, 225-pounder made play after play, both with his arm and his legs. When the dust settled, and the victory was in the books, Chiles was 19-29 for 231 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. The athletic quarterback also had 39 yards rushing and another score, including the game-tying scamper in the second overtime.
Chiles was able to find open receivers, hit a couple of deep throws and move the chains at key moments with his legs. He took care of the ball, remained poised and led his team down the stretch en route a 2-0 start. He seemed to know when to check it down, when to let it rip and when to take off. If he continues to do that and make right decisions, Michigan State is going to be competitive often in 2025.
This isn't exactly a secret for Michigan State fans, but sophomore wide receiver Nick Marsh is working on becoming a household name.
The 6-3, 203-pound wideout reeled in five catches for 68 yards and two scores against the Eagles. Both touchdown receptions were impressive for different reasons but they each highlighted an area of Marsh's game that makes him special.
Marsh is just a second-year player but he has an NFL body already. He used it on his first touchdown by dragging a defender into the end zone from about seven yards out after catching a short slant into the teeth of the defense. On touchdown No. 2, Marsh got behind the defense and showed his blue-chip speed giving him several yards of separation by the time the ball arrived.
All in all, Marsh showed up when Chiles needed him most and was a major reason why Michigan State got win No. 2 tonight. He's a true WR1 and showed that he's better than he was last year. It's also quite apparent that he and Chiles have a phenomenal rapport. Against Boston College, he was targeted 10 times, which led the team by four. He also led the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns.
Scoring points in the second half has been a struggle for Michigan State, really ever since Jonathan Smith arrived in East Lansing. But tonight, the Spartans were able to get it done after the break and during both overtimes against Boston College.
Michigan State was quite balanced through each quarter, really. The Spartans scored 14 in the first half, 13 in the second half and then 15 during the two overtimes. That allowed Smith and Co. to run it up to 42 after it was all said and done.
The team definitely appears to be improving, which is promising and exciting for the rest of the schedule. Michigan State will host Youngstown State next week before hitting the road against USC. The Spartans will then get a week off before heading to Lincoln to play against Nebraska.
