Today, we give thanks.
There are plenty of reasons to be thankful this year. And if you’re anything like me, you’re thankful that Michigan State tips off immediately after yet another soul-crushing Lions loss—so your brain can stop replaying Dan Campbell chaos and instead focus on Spartan hoops.
The 11th-ranked Spartans face the 16th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels down in sunny Florida. As Michigan deals with the first major snowstorm of the season, it’s MSU that’s trying to heat things up in the Fort Myers Classic.
Both teams entered the matchup undefeated at 6–0.
MSU opened the game hot with a Trey Fort three-pointer followed by a massive Coen Carr slam. Carr’s leaping ability was on full display early—he added a sky-high block moments later, setting the tone.
Not to be outdone, UNC freshman star Caleb Wilson answered with a thunderous dunk of his own. As the turkey and gravy settled in across the country, Carr and Wilson made sure no one dared slip into a Thanksgiving nap.
15:33 remaining — MSU 9, UNC 8
After the opening burst, UNC scored inside and MSU again leaned on Carr for offense. The teams traded buckets for several minutes—six lead changes in the first six minutes—before both sides suddenly fell into a scoring lull.
A Cooper foul sent the game into another timeout.
11:49 remaining — MSU 13, UNC 12
UNC hit free throws out of the break. MSU countered with an offensive rebound and put-back after a missed Jordan Scott three. UNC then knocked down a deep ball to take the lead.
Scott struggled, missing another shot and then being called for an off-ball foul—MSU’s fifth team foul, putting UNC in the bonus with more than half the half remaining.
Both teams tightened defensively, trading turnovers and bad possessions. MSU missed an easy layup, momentum shifted to UNC, and the Tar Heels drilled a three to go up five. After another MSU miss, UNC added two more.
Izzo called timeout to settle things.
7:41 remaining — MSU 15, UNC 22
MSU came out of the break having missed 10 of 11 shots. After a missed Jaxon Kohler three, UNC committed a foul on the rebound, keeping the ball with MSU. Jeremy Fears Jr. finally ended the drought with a much-needed bucket.
A defensive stop and a Kohler made three followed—suddenly, MSU was back within two. After a UNC miss, the Spartans had a chance to tie but couldn’t convert. Another UNC miss gave them a second opportunity, and they didn’t waste it.
Fears lofted a gorgeous alley-oop to Carson Cooper, who hammered it down with one hand and drew a foul. He missed the free throw, but a UNC lane violation gave him another shot—this time he converted.
MSU took the lead.
UNC immediately traveled on offense as Spartan fans in Fort Myers made themselves heard.
Then the roof came off.
Divine Ugochukwu drilled a three and the MSU crowd erupted. The Spartans entered the next media timeout on a 13–0 run.
3:18 remaining — MSU 28, UNC 22
UNC hit a badly needed three out of the timeout. Freshman Cam Ward drew a foul on the next MSU possession and made one free throw.
After UNC free throws cut the lead, Coen Carr drove to the rim and was met by Caleb Wilson—great defense, but Ward was right behind the play, scooping the ball and drawing another foul. He hit both, stretching the lead back to five.
MSU appeared to have the final shot of the half, but officials hit Fears with a questionable travel. UNC couldn’t capitalize.
